Default Sportsman 700 carb vs. 500ho

I went to my dealer today to check out prices on 2004 remaining stock. I currently have a Sportsman 400 and am looking to upgrade. They offered me a 500HO for $5600 and the 700 carb for $6350. These are out the door prices. What do you all think. I mainly do a lot of trail riding, pulling lots of hills, and a little bit of snow plowing. Is it worth the extra $750 for the 700. That just seems like a real good price for a 700.

Thanks for all opinions.

i went from a 500 to a 700 carb in '02. the BIG difference was fuel economy. there's no hiding the fact that the 700 carb is a VERY thirsty machine! LOL!

for my riding budget, i'm glad Polaris came-out with the EFI.

BTW, the black/silver looks great for about the first hour of ownership. after that, it's just a scratched-up mess. wish they offered more forgiving colors in the 700.

i'd say go for the 500...............how much more for an EFI?

What do they want for a 600? It's more powerful than a 500, equal to a 700 except for top-end, but gets a little better mileage than a 700. Good machine.

none of the guys I ride with will take a twin. One reason is fuel economy and the other is lack of a pull starter. We can put 120 miles on a machine in a day pretty easy and there is nothing around but us so having to pack extra fuel is a must. Also getting stuck 60 or a 100 miles out cause of a dead battery is no fun! If you are planning on mudding or pulling I would say a 700 but if you are doing remote trail riding I would go for the single piston thumper

Everyone always brings up the fact that there is no pull start on a twin. That doesn't bother me one bit. Is there a pull start on your truck? If you're riding with others, then just bring a set of jumper cables. Besides, I've had my 600 almost 2 years, and have never needed to jump it. As long as you don't run the lights or winch for an hour without the machine running, there won't be a problem. The Twins have a 300 watt charging system, so as long as it's charging, there shouldn't be any worry, besides, the battery that is used is a pretty heavy duty on from the Polaris watercrafts.

The 500 H.O. is a great machine, but don't let the "no pull start" on a Twin scare you. You won't regret the power of a Twin.

SP600,

Went to test drive on Saturday. Drove the 500, 600 and 700. Man, that 700 scared me at first. My little 400 doesn't even think of lifting the front end, but that 700 went right up.

BTW, they want $5850 OTD for the SP600. Still haven't made up my mind but am leaning towards the 500.

Bytor, did you notice if the clutch/tranny making more noise on the twins. Most say they do but I have not been on a twin yet to know.

All of those prices look Ok but I found a place in Chattanooga- about 3 hrs from here- that has the 500 for $5099 OTD. I put a deposit on a 700 carb today- $5499. Lucky for me because I had already put a deposit on one at another dealer for about $6800. I got my deposit back from the first place. I pick it up wednesday. It would be a long drive from Maryland for you, though...

At those prices I'd go with the 600

Beltdrive: That is one of the first things I noticed. Both the 600 and 700 did it. It was only noticeable on a tight turn while varying the throttle.

Trauma: I checked out southernpowersports and their prices are great. MapQuest has it about 10.5 hours from here each way. A little far for me to save $500 although it is tempting.

Still haven't made a decision yet. Am trying to sell my 400 first. My buddy, though, put in his order for the 700 today. Guess I have to look at the 800 now.
