02 Polaris Sportsman 400 - Front Locking Hub Problem?
I noticed today when in AWD and switching from forward to reverse that many times the handlebars would turn sharply to the left - like the right front wheel hub wasn't engaging. I could go forwards again without anything being abnormal. If I turned the AWD off and went forwards and then into reverse again no problem.
Does this sound like a normal situation or a problem with the hub not locking? I've only had it for about a month and this is the first time I've noticed it doing this but today is also the coldest day I've operated it so far. I don't want to make a big deal of it if it is normal for it to do this at times but if it's a problem I need to deal with it before plowing season begins! Any thoughts would be appreciated!

canuckPT;
I, too, have a front wheel hub problem (mine is on an Expecition 425); both front wheels act like the disc brakes are dragging. The quad
really slows down fast when I get off the throttle. I put my hand on the front disc brakes, and they aren't even warm, so I know it must be the hubs. I've done a search on this forum, and see lots of suggestions to change the front hub oil. The first time I did it, I found the original fluid very low and almost black. I've changed the fluid twice now, using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF. I'm still having a problem, though. One of the posts I've read in my search here said to check the nut inside the hub cover. I guess I'll do that tomorrow, and maybe ask the local dealer's repair shop what they recommend. I'm a do-it-yourselfer, so I'd rather get some good advice from anywhere and fix this problem myself. I'd like to know how you solved the problem when you do. TIA

Yeah, that big nut needs to be tightened to the right torque or else it will not engage properly. It is something like 12 INCH pounds, but don't quote me on that. Maybe someone with better access to a service manual can help. Mines at home, i am not. Good luck
