400 sptsmn needs more poop
#1
I bought a used 2002 sportsman 400 and it is a fine machine but when it comes to pulling a long hill it lacks some. I think everything is stock but not positive. I was wondering what I can do to get a little more out of it? It has the ebs on it and I live at about 6000 feet elev most of my riding is between 6-8000 ft any info would be helpful. THANKS

One more question every so often i get a clicking noise that seems to come from the clutch area the local dealer says it is normal but it is driving me nuts what the heck is it?

Could it be the belt slapping on the clutch cover??? I have belts that stretch out and have enough play in them that they will slap the inside of the cover. Before I put in a clutch kit I have also shredded belts and chunks of the belt will flop around inside the cover. Just an idea.

Two things:
A) Change your primary spring to an EPI pink spring.......or another manufacturers with a similar rating. It will allow the engine to operate a little bit higher in the RPM range (and in the meat of the torque) while working under load in high range such as hill climbs. I did it and highly recommend it. The EPI pink spring is $20 and is a simple swap. Also, this spring is not "radical" and does not give any other ill-affects.
B) I don't know what they use for the main jet on the 2002..........but on my 2004 they use a 172 main jet. It is set up to be seriously on the rich side from the factory which is "safe" for the factory since running too lean means higher temps and possible burned piston. After some research I've determined that I should be running a 167.5 jet.......again for sea level operation. Seeing as you're operating in higher altitudes I'd guess that your main jet is probably to rich.

i don't think the stock clutching is able to fit at 6-8000 elevation
from what i remember most HPD clutch kit are made to fit 0-2000 elevation
and i really doubt polaris setup is efficient at over 3000 elevation so
read back the reply above to get another working clutch setup to fit
yours need,as the you go higher, you need lighter weights as well to
still rev the rpm.
