My wifes 2000 325 magnum is a fugi,my 2002 is a robins[suburu] They look identical, other than the nane plate. The fugi seemed to have a little bit more horse power.I did a compression check and it had more than the robins[new] The fugi is the better machine. Most every thing else [gearing] on the atvs are identical

With citizens like you,Bib;we don't need enemies.
Besides, I just bought a Ranger XP with an AMERICAN MADE Liberty engine.
I made darn sure I bought AMERICAN.What I really like is the fact that it's the very best RUV made, PERIOD.
Parts come from all over, but the Polaris has the most AMERICAN content in it, and the money goes to an AMERICAN company.
But I give Kawasaki some credit, some, or all of their engines are made in the USA.Yet the money they make in profits goes overseas.

I guess since the engine is the most expensive part in the machine and we all want to be able to afford an ATV we should be happy that they are produced off shore
If polaris had to pay fat lazy union workes here in Canada or the USAto manufacure motors us consumers would be paying about $30 grand for our next ATV
same reason all kid toys are made off shore and electronics etc...
who would pay $100 for an AMERICAN MADE barbie doll or $1500 for a DVD player
couldn't be possible
made in north america is way too expensive

That 8.1 Liter engine is a 496 Cubic Inch Torque Monster!
GM even puts them in some of their Commercial "Medium Duty" models.
They HAD to go to the Allison Trans, or a beefy manual,to handle the torque. It was twisting 4L80E's apart....and that's what I have in my 454 K2500 chevy pickup,it weighs 100 lbs. more than a 4L60E.
That Cummins is a great engine, I'm not knocking it....a buddy of mine has a Dodge with one in it, all tricked out for max. power.
That engine really smells bad, though, on a bitter cold day. Raw Diesel fuel.......

But GM is getting rid of that engine....I guess it lasts too long!

The Astro Van had the 4.3 Vortec V-6 ( a 350 minus 2 cylinders) not the Buick 3.8, which was/is a great engine too. I had one with 269,000 trouble free miles in a 1990 Buick LeSabre before I sold it--still ran great. Plus, they didn't have a Pontiac variant, it was a GMC Safari.
And the 8100 is a super stong engine, but they weren't twisting 4L80's apart at all. It's actually just as strong as the Allison, and they are still available behind the 8100's in trucks and Suburbans. I know because my 2004 Suburban 2500 4x4 has an 8100 and 4L80 tranny with 4.10s. It's a truly bullit-proof transmission. The Allison just adds features that the 4L80 doesn't...5th gear, engine braking, spin-on filter, etc. So don't knock the 4L80, it's super stong and reliable, more reliable than the Allison actually.

RAW DIESEL!!!!
raw diesel is NOT what you are smelling it is OXIDES OF NITROGEN
I'm sure you are away of how a diesel works (idle=lean high rpm=rich)
SOOO if its cold out and the air is dencer than normal and the engine is leaner than normal
you get higher oxides of nitrogen being produce which is what you are smelling
the cummins engine is the ONLY and I mean ONLY including the DURAMAX which is 100% designed by the manufacture which is CUMMINS
the DURAMAX is designed by GM and manufactured by ISUZU

spyder6, many of us said the same thing at your age, things change, especially after shifting for a living for 10 years I find it quite nice to be able to hold my coffee and not have to put it down for gear changes. however, when it comes to pure driving excitement you are 100% correct, you can't beat a manual tranny. my future '69 Road Runner will definately be a 4 speed!

allisons are pretty good I work at a transmission shop
as well EVERYONE that lives here and owns a diesel seem to chip the hell out of them and I ahven't had one allison come in for a rebuild yet
ALTHOUGH if you get a bad ujoint and drive a 4x4 allison the tcase adapter will crack almost instantly
but the trans themselves work great and I'm definatly NOT a GM man at all

If I can buy a product that is quality for a resonable price that is made in Japan or wherever I would but it in a heartbeat over a US made product that cost more and is not the same quality.
It is not Japan's fault that some US factories can't make quality products.

There's more to a product than it's quality,also. Let's say,for instance;that you buy a Toyota Tundra.By all accounts it's a nice truck.
Then you run into some routine problems....sooner or later, you will.
So:You go to a Boneyard looking for parts....no luck.
Then you go looking for a dealer....If you are lucky, you'll find one, and he'll be able to get your part(s) in a timely fashion.
However, if you're stranded in some low-population town, you might not be able to find a dealer, and used parts will be non-existant.
You are now "Paying more" for buying foreign.
