Pre-Filter Cleaning
#1
Just sending out this post to see what you readers are using to clean the pre-filter. I have been using an auto- car wash soap, and it does not seen to get the black oil deposits off the filter. Have any of you tried spray-nine cleaner????...It says in the manual to use soapy water!!Thanks...... caper..It gets black from the rubber return hose entering the air box.

The foam pre filter will clean up nicely using dish soap. It will last for a long time as long as nothing harsher than dish soap is used. Use dish soap.......

I Havn't tried it but I don't think spray-nine would harm the stock sock on the 450's. I only cleaned my prefilter a couple of times with dish soap, then the paper filter was full of dust, so I put in a Uni-filter.
You can get the Uni-filter from Royal Distributing for about $35.00 CDN. I think the stock Polaris filter is about $20.00 CDN so the Uni is worth while since it should last as long as the quad does. Foam filters are much nicer to deal with if you swamp the quad...just squeeze the water out. Paper on the other hand...your riding back with no filter on.

The uni-filter is a 2 stage foam so the "prefilter" comes with it. The inner foam is more dense than the outer foam. The outer comes off for cleaning and yes it needs to be oiled. I use a K&N filter cleaning kit to clean and oil mine. If the filter is really dirty I use Spray-and-Wash stain remover. There's also a company called Twin Air that makes a two stage foam filter. Don't know how much they are or where to get them though.
