06 sportsman 500 se. Gas gauge fixed
#1
Hi Gang.
Dealer finally brought in a new sending unit for my ride and the guage now works. Yippie!!
In my case, a few weeks back I got a awesome service tech at the dealer and got him to share in my frustrations over the gauge not working at all on a new ride. After he was done, for a few hours the tank seemed to read on the gauge. The service guy pulled all the fuel and moved the float somehow and put the fuel back in.. He did warn me the tank design is a beast and thats what was causing the many 06 guage problems. He tells me the float has to travel on such an incline that it sometimes messes up the accuracy of the guage on many bikes in that model line.
He did say he would get the office staff to go the distance and bring in a new sending unit for me anyway. Like he said, tank design or not, the guage should read something even if it moves around a bit. My gauge never ever moved off full. Service guy was aces... Lesson here is that the dummy on the service counter never heard me say "the gauge does not read at all".... he thought my tank was reading fuel levels in error, thus the reluctance to help out.
The tank did stop reading again while I was waiting on the sending unit to get in. While I was waiting I was keeping an eye on the tank and gauge to see if I could spot anything odd happening. I did notice that when the gas cap was off and you would shake the bike you couuld hear the sucking noises and the gauge would attempt to read only for a brief blip on the gauge..... The gauge blip only happened with the cap off though...that led me to think the sending unit would work in my case and sure enough so far it has...
Just thought I would share because there were so many posts on this a few weeks back.
cheers
