Default charging problem 99 Sportsman 500

Just looking for a little confirmation with my troubleshooting. I have the repair manual and been through the flow chart. Basically with it running I have about 12V at the battery. Not good. I also have 12V on the red wire at the rectifier. This is good. The next test is to unplug the yellow and yellow/red wires from the stator. Then take a multimeter and put the red lead in the 10 amp jack, switch the meter to A~, start it up and test the amps on the yellow and yellow/red wires. I guess this replicates a full load on the stator and the output should be 5amp or higher. I get nothing. Basically I put the red probe from the meter on yellow and black on the yellow/red. I got 0 amps. Then I switched the probes and still got 0 amps.
I assume I did this test right? If I did the manual says there is a problem with the stator. Can someone confirm what I have done so far?

Thanks, Jon

i dont know, but seems if the stator was bad, you wouldnt be getting 12 volts to the recifier. but im no electrican either.

If your checking for amperage.....You need to be in-line...or other words.......both probes in one path for the current to flow for a amp reading......Other way is to have a clamp-on meter, which will need to be AC/DC for the reading to work on your 12 volt system!!!...Caper.........

Caper is correct, you need to be in-line. However, jbirdmotox, you did test the stator correctly because you were in-line with the stator. Are you sure the fuse in the meter is good and are you sure you were on AC? Did you ohm the stator wires?

Thanks for all the replies. I started testing the stator output with a fancy electronic Fluke tester. I never thought to check the fuse on the 10 amp plug but maybe I should have. I decided to check the output with a cheap Radio Shack meter and what do know, I had about a 5 amp output on the yellow and yellow/red wires. I guess I need to look at the fuse in the Fluke.
Looks like it's time to find a voltage regulator.

Thanks again.
