I have a 98 polaris 400 sport. How do weights and the primary and secondary springs work together. And what are the individual characteristics of changing each when considering backshift, clutch engagement rpm, and rpm under full throttle?

in a nut shell ........primary spring effects engagement speed, shift rate, top rpm. weights control the way the spring shifts out along with controlling engagement rm,top rpm,and a lot more, secondary spring controls mainly the backshift but also effets top rpms, belt grip. This all gets VERY confusing because every thing effects the other.
The best thing is like I said....get the manual and start changing things ONE AT A TIME and see the difference. But you will need a tach to tell for sure.
Is that what you wanted Doc?
Bet he is good and confused now.We all were when we first got interested in clutching.

i've read the Aaens clutch and carb books. very good info to lean and have to under stand how the whole process works and kina of a must if you want to play w/ clutching. be warned that buying differnt parts will be costly but thats the price you pay for tuning for the best you can get.

A basic piece of knowledge, would be to understand the centrifugal clutch.
Or call Rick Ritter with your wants and needs and he will spec it for you. Doc
