Default Sportsman 400 and 450???

Thats odd for sure. A Sportsman 300 has a larger gas tank(4.5) than a Sportsman 800(4.1).
When the Sportsman first came out in 1996 they had a large 5 gallon tank and it shrunk down ever since.

Hey can we change out our gas tanks for bigger tanks? I mean yea it would be a challenge
to match colors but can we use older models and such if bigger? Anyone done it? Is it worth it?

In some trails my sportsman 500HO feels too big and a little slow. but then again almost everyone where Im ridding at is ridding a dirtbike or sport quad. there some Utility quads. this make me really think about that sportsman 400HO or 07 Scrambler5004x4

2002 was the last Sportsman with the large 5.25 gal tank. I don,t think that one would fit.

Kaw and Can Am managed to fit them, Brute force 750 has a 5 gal,800 Can Am has a 6.5 gal!

The Sportsman 500 engine is unchanged in engine and frame sizes yet it has a went through these tank uprades (Down Grades more like it).

96-02 5.25Gal tank
03-05 4.75 gal tank
2006 4.25 gal tank
07-08 4.1 gal tank

I think its more cost cutting than running out of room. I,m sure they will not go lower than a 4.1 tank in 09 because gas in this sport does get to be very important on long rides.

Polaris manage to fit a 6 gal tank on there Sportsman 800X2,is that ATV not just a SP800 with a extended frame?

I could be wrong, but I believe the X2 engine sits more rearward in the frame than the engine in the single seat, thereby making more room for a larger fuel tank. The X2 tank must be larger at the bottom.
