My quad was stolen. AGAIN!!!
#1
My quad was stolen early this morning. I don't have a garage and it won't fit in my shed so it was parked behind my truck at the very back of my driveway. I had it chained, through the frame, to a fence post with a big log chain and a huge padlock. My fence posts are pounded down into the ground 4 feet deep and the top rails are welded on. I THOUGHT it was secure. Someone found the weakest link in the chain and used bolt cutters to cut it in two places. You ARE the weakest link. Goodbye! They cut through a six foot high chain-link fence and pushed it aside. Then they pushed my quad backward into the neighbors yard and left on the other side of the block instead of on my street.
This is the same quad that was stolen less than a year ago and recovered. They caught the guy riding down the road on the other side of town last time. While he was on bond for joyriding in a stolen car!!! I got it this one as a replacement for the 97' and '01 that were stolen in another theft in '06. Two stolen together in '06, the new one stolen in '07 and again in '08. I had my quads parked there unlocked for 9 friggin' years without a problem, and then they come and steal them 4 times in 2 years, and nothing will stop them. The little bastard that stole it last year is still in juvie. I checked with the prosecuters office this morning, and it was someone else this time.
I'm going to tell the insurance adjustor that it would be cheaper for them to pay for secure storage than to keep buying me new quads or repairing them. The '97 was totalled and I still don't know where the '01 ended up. The insurance company gave me just enough money for my TWO quads to buy ONE new one. Lot's of people like Polaris quads as much as I do, but some of them won't spend any money on one. It's cheaper to steal one every time you want to go for a ride.
Some of you are bound to ask why I don't just move. Will you PLEASE buy me a house so I can? This whole city has gone to **** except a mile away where all the mansions are, and I can't aford to live there. The big businessmen and the mayor pay off-duty cops to patrol the neighborhood all night while the rest of us suffer. The suburbs are a little safer but rapidly going downhill, and more expensive. I don't know anywhere I can afford to live that's any better. My Mom's neighborhood was really nice for 40 years and it went to **** too. I feel like there's no escape from the crime unless I keep moving every time a place starts to get bad, and that's no way to live either. Gangs of thieves from the Detroit area have been know to hop on the freeway, drive for over an hour, and steal from the people in rural areas that aren't even used to locking their doors.
Any ideas how to make a quad theft-proof? Or anyone giving away a house in a nice neighborhood? I don't think there's a good place to put a Lo-Jack to track it after they steal it, so I have to stop them. I have an itchy trigger finger and an arsenal that would make a police department jealous, but that won't do me any good. I don't like prison.

They make fairly inexpensive surveillance cameras now that even see in the dark. You can feed that to a VCR or DVR and will help fnid out who did it and if the camera is visible deter anyone from attemtping to steal it in the first place.
Also you might want to look into a motion detecting light. NOT a light that is constantly on - those are worse than useless - but a motion detecting floodlight.
Last but not least get some time with criminal defense attorney and find out your exact laws regarding self defense. The next time you catch some stealing your quad he might just be armed with a tool of some sort that looks like a gun or something that would do you physical harm which leads you to be in fear of your life and as a result the thief ends up ambient room temperature.
Probably be better at keeping thieves at bay than anything else.

It might be a pain but if you put the ATV in the back of your truck each night and back the truck up against a wall, there is no way someone will lift a 700lb ATV out of the box.

Unfortunately in Michigan you have to let someone attack you first before you can legally defend yourself, and you have NO RIGHT to defend your property. And when you are attacked you have to be able to prove you were in fear for your life. When I was in my yard and my former neighbor threatened to get a gun and shoot me the police said I should have dropped everything and ran away instead of standing my ground and defending myself.
I had a motion sensor light that broke so now it's just a floodlight. That gives them lots of light to work in. I guess the motion sensor would at least make them wonder if someone is looking.
I was sitting right here typing away and didn't hear anything and neither did my dog. I guess I should trade my tumor-dog in for a rabid pit-bull.
Pretty good suggestions so far. I can't put a quad in my truck because of my topper. I keep looking out the window to see if my truck and trailer are still there.

If there's any justice in the world the ECM will make it burst into flame and the "human torch" will look like a comet going down the road. I believe in SEVERE punishment and would like to see these people die before they can victimize someone else. Maybe they start out stealing and move up to rape and murder. And it's not like it was sitting there running and they hopped on for a joyride either. It took some work and planning to steal it. I figure it must be professional thieves who do this all the time for a living.
