VIN Decode Request on Sportsman 500
#1
Hi All,
I picked up a Sportsman 500 last night for $800 while helping a guy move. He had rolled it, scared himself and parked it in the garage for the last 2 years. It needs a recoil starter, a battery (obviously) and a front bumper and rack (broken in the rollover).
I cranked it last night (just with some ether) after I got home - it runs. Power washed it today and going to start cleaning out the carb and looking for the bits and pieces he broke on Ebay so I need to find out the year of this beast.
Any help out there?
Regards,
Jim Wooten
P.S. picked up a 1965 Massey-Furguson MF7 and a brand new rack mount electric broadcast spreader in the deal for the Polaris. Think I did well...

That says it's a 4-wheeled snowmobile. 10th digit = the vehicle year. The letters I, O and Q are never used within a VIN in order to avoid mistakes made by misreading them. W is '98. This site has interesting VIN info but doesn't decode it. http://www.atvstyle.com/index.php/atv-vin-number

You may want to safe guard your VIN#. I would edit out that post, just for air on the side

Good point Rtic. I told people that on other posts too but forgot this time.

I've seen guys post their phone number too and leave it up after they've been warned. You can Google the number and get a map to their house. Microsoft Virtual Earth will zoom in so close you can count the roof vents on the house, floats in the swimming pool, etc. You can see everything in their yard with just a phone number.
