Default 02 Sportsman 500HO

Hi. In October I bought a blue 02 Sportsman 500HO X for $4200. Had 1600 miles, and came with a 2500lb winch. This is my first ATV, i'm not very mechanically inclined when it comes to ATVs so I thought I would introduce myself and ask a few questions.

Maintainence wise,

1. What oil and how many quarts should I use for it and how often should I change it? and where do I buy the oil filter?

2. I need to change my fuel filter because if it idles too long, it dies out. What part # or where do I buy from and what procedures are necessary for changing?

3. I would like to get a better air filter, what would be suggested?

4. It doesn't like being ran in the cold too much, how do I adjust the idle to run higher? and where is the carburetor on this thing?

Now customizing wise,

1. I would like to get some sound out of this thing, what are my options for exhausts? I really like the sound of the Big Gun kit. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...8&feature=channel_page Its deep toned and aggressive under throttle, perfect. Where could I buy from, or whats better suggested out there?

2. I would surely love to lift it, or atleast get the front end leveled with the rear, what are my options?

3. Is there any way I could get HIDs? I have the clouded lenses, could I upgrade to clear lens headlamps?

4. As seen in that video of the Polaris with the Big Gun exhaust, where can I get those hand guards for the handles?

Thanks to all who read.

1. What oil and how many quarts should I use for it and how often should I change it? and where do I buy the oil filter?

STP SMO17 ,Napa Oil Filter #1358 or Fram CPH6607 There are many more substitute parts here use Amsoil 0w-40 or the Polaris dealer stuff, both are full synthetic oils.

2. I need to change my fuel filter because if it idles too long, it dies out. What part # or where do I buy from and what procedures are necessary for changing?

Either your idle screw is set wrong (bottom of carb) or you have to adjust throttle cable slack at the thumb throttle to bring idle up a touch.

3. I would like to get a better air filter, what would be suggested?

The stock ones filter more dirst than a K&N aftermarket, I would stay with it.

4. It doesn't like being ran in the cold too much, how do I adjust the idle to run higher? and where is the carburetor on this thing?

Same as answer to #2 take side covers off to see carb.

Thank you for the replies guys I much appreciate it. No worries about me putting a K&N on it, i'll never use one of their dust sucking filters. I was wondering if there was anything better than the stock ones. Thanks.

Mobil 1 oil 0w40w or Polaris. Oil Filter = NAPA 51358, Wix 1358 or Polaris. Recomend using stock air filter. Idle adjustment is a phillips screw attached to a rubber piece by the pull starter. Turn this left or right depending on higher or lower idle. I have had four Sportman 500s and all were /are cold blooded.

Use the Uni Filters without Oil and use a sock over it, Their cheap and you could buy a couple every year.
