05 Sportsman 800 only getting 50-55mph...
So i just bought a used 05 800 with 1300 miles and 161 hours for 3 grand. Think i got a pretty good deal... Ive already put 100 miles and 12 hours with no apparent problems other then it needed rear wheel bearings which i replaced myself (20 dollar ford escort bearings )...
On a long stretch of road slightly down hill it would get 55mph.. going up that same stretch would only get 50 mph.. I checked the rpms at speed and was getting a consistant 5950 rpms... Came with ITP 589 27" mud tires so i know top speed will be lower with these tires due to weight and much higher rolling resistance.
Im guessing though even with these tires i should be getting better then 55mph slightly down hill. Im guessing it must be a belt issue, glazed or whatnot... Its getting nearly 6000 rpm so i dont think its a motor issue??
let me know what you guys have experieced... thanks

Wouldn't the tire diameter throw off the speedometer? I know on my truck my speedometer reads about 10% slow with my larger tires, so 55 is actually a little over 60. With 27" muds you may be higher than 10%. Add the mph the speedo is off, to the extra wieght of the tires, and you may be about right for that setup

I don't know, I think I am going to remove that Dalton clutch spring. I want a safer bike for steep hills and with engaging the clutch for more bottom end torq it shifts the power more back and down making the front end jumpy. If that makes sense?
Either way Rick Ritter may be able to help guide you with clutch cfg. for top speed etc. with running bigger tires.

thanks alot guys... i will mention i dont really *care* about top speed to much, 50 is plenty on an 4x4 atv.... i just wanted to make sure that the machine will do what it is supposed to do. i was thinking belt and i just wanted to get other opinions as ive only had this atv for a little over a week.
i mean it is reving to 6000rpm so it cant be a motor issue as the limiter is what ~6100rpm?
