1994 Polaris 400L 4X4 current draw when machine is off

1994 polaris 400l 4x4
Im having a problem with the 4 wheel drive on my machine. So my question is do i need a battery in order for my 4x4 to work. The guy i bought my machine from said the 4 wheel drive did work at one point and he also said he never needed a battery and only used the machine to plow snow.
