EPI clutch questions.. .
#1
Morning guys!!
I think its time to upgrade my clutch and belt. (2007 EFI 700 Sportsman 4x4)
I have been riding some new to me trails lately. These have some wide open, long flat dirt roads. I am really able to open up the 700 as I haven't before. I feel that my clutch is slipping allowing the RPMs to bounce off the rev limiter. (I'm assuming it has one) It has done this every time I peg the throttle, speed is about 30-35MPH I don't know RPMs.
I also notice the slipping when shifting back into hi range. Much of this area is rocky climbs in the woods. This time of year lots of ice too. Lo range seems fine. (I know it most likely is slipping here too) I don't feel the slipping. but as soon as I get to the flat open areas I shift into hi and the slipping becomes very apparent.
Now I am likely upgrading my tires next year with something a bit larger and slightly more aggressive. Nothing radical, I'm no mud pit rider, strictly trails, wooded and open some lite, shallow mud and rocky creek beds and hill climbs.
So a Bighorns & GBC Spartacus Radials are top contenders. Likely in a 27" diameter and as close to stock width as possible.
Clutch kit was going to be done at the same time. But now with these problems, I'm thinking of upgrading clutch and belt now and tires later.
Here is my question:
I'm looking at the EPI kit for sport utility and bigger tires.
EPI: POLARIS • 700 SPORTSMAN EFI 4x4 07 • SPORT UTILITY
Will installing this now with the stock 26" Carlisle tires create any problems?

there is definately something wrong if its hittin the rev limiter at 30-35 mph in high, should run 60 +, no the epi kit wont hurt anything with stock tires , you will have lots of bottom end, sounds like the belt is pretty bad, might buy the 800 belt when you relace it, they are alot tougher belt, look clutches over good for grooves in the sheaves, broken springs ect, check your front motor mount, they are known to break on those machines

OK good news, I figured this, but wanted the consensus. (Please keep opinions coming!!
)
I bought this machine form a dealer, used with 80+- miles. it was strictly a plow machine for personal use. SO, looks to me like he was plowing in high range allot!! Machine is SUPER clean, the price was good so I bought it.
The belt was my next question. i know to buy Polaris, but suggesting the 800 belt is good advice..

If its been plowing a lot definitely check the motor mount, take a bar and put under front of engine and see if you can lift it or move it side to side while watching motor mount, 800 belt is more $ but worth it IMO
Is Polaris belt #3211116 the one I should be looking for?

Running the oversize tire kit with the stock tires is doable. It will allow your machine to run aprox 200 rpms higher when at full throttle and will take away some of your top end speed. The other thing you can do is order the stock tire kit now and runnit that way until you get your bigger tires and then call EPI and they can get you set up with what you need to update, it will cost a little more but will give you the best overall performance.
I would definately inspect your clutches and belt. I would clean the clutches and use a fine sandpaper or scotchbrite to scuff off any belt glazing on the clutch sheaves. Sounds like it is slipping bad or your belt it shot if its hitting the rev limitor when you nail it.

Good news!! I am not concerned with top speeds. This machine is head and shoulders above most all I ride with. We are not speeders anyhow.
Roger that on the glazing of the clutches. I will defineately be paying close attention to the surfaces!
I have found a Polaris 700/800 belt for a very good $ and grabbed it. I'm about to drop the hammer on that clutch kit too.
Thank you very much for the information!!
