lots of used cases around. Rick ritter might have some, to build up an engine for you.
fun quad to have, certain things are problems. other stuff can be better than newer ones. wheel bearings don't seem to be disposable on these.

I'm wondering if the counterbalance bearings pilied up. leaking water pump seals can cause them to rust.

The thing is once you do find cases you wouldn't want to just piece it back together using old parts from the old engine. You would want to have a new rod pressed on,bore the cylinder, new piston/rings along with bearings, seals, water pump bearing and seals, head and base gaskets, etc. You have to decide if it's a money pit. Some of the things you can do,others have to be subbed out! Figure out what you have in it already and the total after repairs against what Nada and Kelly book values! I've had people repair em saying"cheaper than buying a brand new one" down to people that just sold em for parts on Ebay or just sold em at salvage yards! But you still have to remember it will still be an old atv no matter what you do! OPT

any ideas on what could have caused that? Any idea on reapir costs? I found a guy that charges 25 an hour which isnt bad but then I have to ad cost of parts. Also that would def be why the idle is so high? If worst comes to worst I just try to take the thing apart myself and get someone to fix it atleast save some money by me taking it out. Just sucks I looked at the carb and seems to be in good shape and so does the drive belt.

Most of the time it's either a cracked piston skirt, lower rod bearing or even crank bearings that may have spit out small ball bearings that causes this damage OR could be the counter balancer bearings or gear fragments that just explode and have to go somewhere.By the looks of the cases, looks to me like could be a partially shattered piston skirt because it's almost center of the cases and looks like part of the crank shaft showing. Skirt damage was what I usually encountered when this happened. Just get an estimate from the guy on his work and the parts, plus cases. OPT

Could have been the piston grinding? Or you could have a belt ,clutch or transmission silent chain problem? Like I said You have to decide if it's worth repairing (versus just scrapping it) and doesn't matter what I or anyone else tells you! Good luck on whatever you decide! OPT
