Has anyone else tried the EPI sport/utility clutch kit. I've tried one in my '96 Scrambler 400 4x4 however the performance seems to get worse. For instance to move in reverse I have to use the override button even on flat ground, with the stock unit that is not necessary. It also seems as though the engine won't reach as high of an RPM. I thought maybe I was installing it wrong but I can put the stock unit in with no problem. The bike is totally stock. Anyone have any ideas what the problem is and has anyone had good luck with EPI? Thanks

thats the way a clutchkit works. when you put in a stiffer spring in it takes more RPMs before the clutch engages and the rev limiter onthe reverse button is set really low.

I had a EPI clutch kit on my 99 500cc Sportsman, with installation,it cost me about 230 dollars, what a WASTE of money. It raised my engagement speed a little, and I also wound up using the override button every time I had to go into reverse. This is a little HASSEL when plowing snow!

On my 2000 400cc Xplorer,Rick Ritter, the owner of RcR racing, would NOT sell me an ENTIRE clutch kit.He charged me 25 dollars and told me to change the primary spring over from the stock blue/green to green.I did the primary spring change that Rick mentioned and for the 25 dollars, that spring change did more for my Xplorer in performance than the ENTIRE EPI clutch kit did on my Sportsman.

A friend of ours on this ATV Connection Forum,Xplor, uses the whole EPI clutch kit on his Xplorer and likes it VERY much. The clutch kits seem to work most effectively on the 2 strokers.I think that is because of their ability to make RPMs much quicker?

Yep...I am the one who has had two of these EPI clutch kits and they worked great for me. On the Xplorer, I really fealt a good improvement overall throughout the power-range. On the Scrambler it gave me a ton of low-end and much more midrange. I ended up removing it because I now have a full-blown trail mod 400.

It was well worth the money onless you plan on getting more mods in the future...like a pipe, carb, roller clutch or porting.

Good luck!

(Bill...how is the pipe working?)

Xplor,
I have very mixed feeelings about the pipe. The PSI pipe performed very well ABOVE 8mph and was a turtle below 8mph?My AVT felt like a ROCKET after 8mph with it?

Now,[Dynoport]on acceleration,I did at least re-gian my low end speed! It just BUGS me knowing I still have some un left juices flowing in my engine? But nobody[Utility wise] wants a piece of this utility quad,I'll blow them away. This guy,on a utility 450es just sat and WATCHED me yesterady blow other 4x4 UTES away. Not even a race,I smoked them.

Bill, Here's one nobody ever talked about for an Xplorer yet--> 12:1 Billet Cool Head? Before adding it to my Scrambler along with the trail porting I had limited low end power and tons of mid and top.(due to the trail pipe)

After installation I have more low end than even the EPI kit did. I can crawl around like crazy but it still feels tremendously stonger in mid and top because of the porting and carb.

Any others know if this could work? I may get one for my Xplorer. Hmmm...something else to think about!
