90% percent of the time it's just the regulator/rectifier,but best to check out the stator like you did!

Opt,

I am having an issue with my 1997 Polaris sportsman 500 over charging. Hitting 16-18 volts. I figured it must be the voltage regulator. I have order a new one online and was just about to install it but noticed an issue. The factory voltage regulator has 5 wires ( brown, yellow with brown tracer, red, yellow , yellow with red tracer. The replacement regulator only has 4 wires . It is missing the yellow with brown tracer. Would this be an issue if I didn't hook up the yellow with brown tracer. It appears the models after this all have the 4 wire regulators. Thanks in advance.

Sounds like someone gave you the wrong one. The original 4060133 has 5 wires.https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Rectifi...-/231631220834 and so does the 2205046 replacement.https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Rectifi...-/280574223043

Yea it is looking that way now. Crap! Might have to eat that cost now . I have took one off my parts quad and it is part # 4060191. It appears they are similar but this one does not fit where the old one was bolted up. Does this regulator need to be bolted in for grounding purposes? I was thinking of just zip tieing it in for now.

Should have a little aluminum heat sink strip that the regulator mounts into and the frame. Helps dissipate heat from the regulator. Item#33.

Default Not right ohms from stator

Yellow to Yellow/Red .37 ohms
Yellow to Yellow/Brown .17 ohms. Plus no Yellow should zero out to ground. Hope this helps. Most of the time it's usually a voltage regulator problem, but you can't rule out the stator until it's checked out. Here's a cheap place for regulators. Polaris ATV Rectifier Regulator
I need help, stator or regulator?
I got red/Black to green 429 ohms, ok? I got white/red to white 89 ohms ok? I got yellow to yellow/red 3 ohms ok? I got yellow to yellow/brown 3 ohms ok? All yellow to ground OL ok?
