I like the Polaris but I've done more working on it than I have riding it. I'm kinda wanting a racing wheeler i like the speed but I also need something I can use for my work lots of hauling an rough terrain. But hopefully get this Polaris running cause it can handle what i need it for it showed that a lil while it was running pulled a big log over the levy

It's a 2 stroke,it's gonna smoke. If it's a lot of white smoke and you have a sweet smell it could be seeping coolant through the head gasket, the pipe itself could be coated with old oil and need time to burn out,if the oil pump or premix you're using is too rich it will smoke excessively, too much fuel from a worn out carb needle and seat can cause excess smoke, etc. You've worked all around this engine, but never said if you replaced the piston, rings, etc when you had it apart, had it bored, etc. Another area that could problems. This is/was a good engine, but if you're going to work on a 400 the only way I'd ever touch one again is to go from top to bottom on a full engine rebuild. There's just too many parts that can wear, unlike most air cooled two stroke or four stroke engines that imo are simpler..

heres a new question im gonna try ditching the 400 engine an hopefully remount a bored out 250 air cooled engine from a 87 cyclone was wondering if this is going to be a easy mount in looks like everything should bolt over. my idea using 400s carb an the tranny but mostly wondering what people think is this gonna be simple, can I use the exhaust from the 400 also? this is mounting into the xplorer frame any input would be helpfull

As long as you don't mind having to reach down on the transmission to shift gears, the engine can fit,may be a little off on the three engine mounts. The exhaust you may or may not be able to use.The wiring harness from the 250 has to be used. The stator, the regulator, cdi has to be used, etc. More than just swapping engines, plus you'd loose the front wheel drive. Sounds like you need to concentrate on fixing one or the other up rather than trying to butcher both atvs up..
