For mud and trail Maxxis Zillas are a great tire.

 

For helmets you could get the cheapest DOT kind approved you can find. I like the motocross style that protects your chin/lower face. I think mine was $40 and I see others available for $50. If you can find a closeout sale you can get good brands cheap.
