Temptations of the scram. 2x4

Thanks so much guys. I dont know how often ill need the 4x4. thats my problem. I also dont want a maintanence HOGG. I want to bust some tails but I dont want to have to do a big bunch of building at the end of each year. What i am saying is that i dont want to drop $5000 in a quad and w/in a year and a few mods, ill have to do rebuilding. How hard is it to change rings? I am very interested in upgrades but im no upgrade hogg either. Im no big on going into that engine. I dont mind the pipe and clutching and jetting and so forth. I just want to make a good decision. No one that lives near me has any type of sport polaris's, NONE!
I guess ill have to find a dealer who will let me ride. I dunno, its killing my brain.
Thanks guys

I forgot, How well will it handle the trails? Mudd, water, ?????? Burning plugs bad????? Ill probably have more ?'s storming w/in my brain and ill post. Sorry things are so long, I just need some reinforcement in my decision. The main 2 things is #1 im scared of owning a 2-stroke and #2 i dunno if ill use 4x4 enough to pay for it. I have no clue as to what kind of riding ill be doing.

Road Dogg,
Dont be put off by a 2 strokle and the potential for maintenance. My freind has a 96 400 Sportman. It is a s stroke motor and he has not had ANY problems whatsoever, and believe me, he is not much into even low level maint. Even if you did have to change rings, IT really is not hard at all. It sounds like youd be happry with the 4x2 Scrambler, although If it were me, Id get the 4x4 400 that way I could ride in all sorts of terrain. I have another freind with a 400 $x$ all hopped up and it screams. He has paddles on all four wheels, quite the sight!

Road Dog, get the 400 Scrambler or Explorer. I have a 4-stroke, and a 2-stroke, yeah...the 4 stroke is reliable and low maintenance, but when something goes wrong, you'll spend 3-4 times what you would on a 2-stroke to fix it. To be perfectly honest, I know plenty of guys who have 2-strokes in all types of quads, and have few problems. The ones who do ride them too hard and have too many mods in my opinion. If you keep the engine basically stock, it will last.

The drag times in magazines are always faster while in 4wd insead of 2wd I guess due to the added traction & more power to the ground. I ride very hard & fast some times racing w/ my friends, racer type of quads & I use the 4wd all the time. Going into a corner that you want to spin the end around in, while you let off the throttle & apply brakes, hit the 4wd button for 2wd then hit the throttle & the end comes around or if your in 2wd going into the corner & want max acceleration going into the straight very quickly let off the throttle(1/2 second), hit the 4wd button & back on the throttle again with all 4 wheels roosting. Its hard even for the quickest quads to out accelerate a high HP 4wd Scrambler in most dirt conditions. Plus I would never have explored most of my new surroundings & new trails if I didn't have 4wd since I am usually by myself & in some cases I could definately run into trouble in 2wd being by myself. The 4wd gives an added confidence builder plus the added safety of not worring about getting stuck in the middle of a hill. If a Srambler gets stuck on a hill then I dont want to go up it. I know I'm biased but I think you would be very happy w/ the 400 Scrambler 4x4. I said I wasnt going to modify mine either unil I started buying HP parts for it & saw how much stuff was out there for it & read about it. I love ordering toys(quad parts). If you get the 500 then the hop-up potential of the quad experience wont be there to the same extent as if you went w/ the 400.

I have a 95 300 express and I have about 4000 miles on it. It has not lost any noticeable power since the day I bought it. Although I do keep mine inside I always Keep it clean and the air filters clean. I think that has alot to do with keeping the two strokers in business for a long time. My Father owned a snowmobile dealership for about 20 years, He told me that the reason people don't have alot of problems with the two-stroke sleds is because the are cold weather machines and are very seldom around dirt and dust just snow. I really think that is outrageous that you would have to put in a new piston and rings every year. On the worst treated sleds you would have to put a new piston and rings in maybe after 7500 miles to 8500 miles and that is a big maybe... Every year sounds like alot.

I didn't mean to imply that the piston HAD to be replaced every year. I just do it out of habit rather than necessity. I'm used to tearing my MX bikes down every year, and its just something I've carried over to my ATV, considering how HARD I ride it. Besides getting the parts at nearly cost helps too.

Well Fellas,
Ive made my decision and i believe its a very good one. Hoping that i live quite a few more years in this life, heres what im gonna do. Ive decided to stick w/ the 500 scrambler B/C i am in college right now and have a year and a half left. I wanted something that i wouldnt have to fool w/ much (pipe, filter, jet) b/c i didnt have the time and still dont. I also have 3 tourny level paintguns to keep up and that dont sound like much, but w/ school and all the other things i have to do its a hassle (although I am selling one to get a good down Payment) BUT, all this talk has an impact too. The 500 will become a Hand-me-down to my girlfriend when i graduate and get started in life. I should then have plenty of time to play w/ the 400 two stroke I plan on getting. (hopefully for graduating) IF polaris dosent release a new MONSTER w/in the next year or so. (which would be very exciting) I want to thank you guys very much on your imput, and i could still get a wild hair and decide to go two stroke b/t now and this time next month.
Thanks for the input guys. Ill let you know when i get it! (and what i get)
Thanks again,
Tha Road DoGG
