I got my 96 400 sportsman hung up good on a sand bar in river mud and sand and when i was pulling it out with my 425 magnum i ended up breaking both front 4x4 chains.Has anyone else had this problem and how do i cure it other than staying out of sand) Brad ----------------96 425 magnum 4x4-------------96 400 sportsman------------2001 Breeze (my sons)

yes its happened to me several times... never pull with your machine in reverse. this makes the frt end get great traction an will snap the chain. it will always happen if you engage the 4wd while the rear tires are spinning. the 99s and up have sensor that will not allow the 4wd to engage if the rear tires are spinning over 15 mph

ok i never hit it when its moving anyway,
but i had a crazy idea
i have lake front property and love the ice, lets say i go flying in 2wd, slam the brakes, of course the quad will keep sliding, then engage awd and have traction, that would work right? or while sliding stop tires and put it in reverse or neutral

lol kukerdan, you might wanna be careful with it. But I'd say that just as long as your tires are all moving the same speed, it's fine to engage 4wd. As for shifting while moving, just make sure your drive tires are completely locked up, and don't let them unlock until you've got enough engine speed to overcome the fact that they're going the wrong way...
Also, I'd be pretty careful if I were you, and I'd say not to try anything at too high a speed, or you're likely to damage SOMETHING, whether it be tires, driveline, or you.
