Bubba, that's what I did, and when I put it back on I left that bracket hang it's very hard to get the starter off witout bending it.

Hey guys....i replaced a starter in a 400 explorer a lil while back...and it was farily simple task....removed botch clutches and the backing plate and you have full access to the starter bracket on the rear....take the pull starter cover off...take the starter bolts out there, remove the now easy to access rear bracket bolts, the starter wire...and voila...slide it out. Hope this helps

I tried bending the bracket and broke it on my scrambler. Those new racheting wrenches worked great on getting my starter out. Ended up rebuilding mine myself, new brushes and seals. Siliconed the heck out of it when I put it back together.

I went to a local electric shop and they had about evry size/ length of brushes I needed. I paid like $5 for them and my started works perfect again. You will have to use some kind of strong sodder I used a blow toarch and a brazing rod.
