I have a copy of an atv 4 wheel action magazine and they where have a shootout between th Grizz 600 and Sportsman 500. They preferred the Sportsman over the Grizz.

I feel the same way, the 4whl action mag. for Feb. list the Sport 400 as a ATV not capable as being a high performance machine.

All they do is point out the pros and cons of the machines. The shootout didn't bash the X-plorer, just told you of its weak points. That's helpful info so people don't waste their hard earned dollars. Maybe the quad is crap. I don't own one, I wouldn't know. After that article, I wouldn't own one. If you get ATV Sport, they love Polaris machines. They always have an article, if not two, on Polaris'.

If you guys think any of that is unfair, look at this shootout this month from 4 wheel atv action.

Hi performance Champion
Honda 400ex <--- The winner! $5699
Banshee $5899
Gas Gas 300
Enforcer 400
Enforcer 600E
Bombadier 650 $6999

Sport machines
Blaster $2999
Polars trail blazer $3199
Mojave 250 $3999
Honda 300EX <--- The winner $4799
Yamaha warrier $4949
Polaris sport 400 $4799

First of all how did The 400ex win against machines they couldnt even test yet? What advantage does the 400ex have over the bombadier...the price is all! Next, wouldnt anyone take a Warrier or a Polaris sport 400 or even a mojave over that 300ex? Expecially because the 300ex is nearly the most expensive of the bunch! The 300Ex winning over the Polaris sport 400 is what really burns me. Both machines are the same price. Which is much faster? The polairs Which has better suspension The polaris (10.5" rear wheel travel VS. 7.8" of wheel travel) Which is a better deal for the money? The polaris. Maybe they just prefer the air cooled 300cc 4 stroke engine over the Liquid cooled 400 2 stroke on the polaris...they need to give polaris credit where its due.

Thats not the worst yet!

How about the Yamaha wolverine winning over the polaris scramblers 400/500? Heres the specs

Yamaha
AIR COOLED 350 4 stroke
VS.
Polaris
LIQUID COOLED 400 2 stroke or the 500

yamaha
7.1" of wheel travel rear
VS.
polaris
10.5" of wheel travel rear

yamaha
$5599
VS.
polaris
$5399
Sorry but polaris would get my money on that one!

The magazines care very little for anything but a race machine! Something that is easy to ride, fun, tough as nails, and durable mean very little to these magazines. Have you noticed that 3/4 of the articles are on race machines? Polaris quads have gained in market share for the last six years.

I would dare to guess that "Shootout" winners likely have a lot more to do with the "Testers" brand loyalties than one might think. And if you will notice most of these "Test riders" personal machines are ussually 250Rs or something of that nature. Sometimes they do a test and it comes out pretty good other times it just doesn't add up.

I know exactly why the magazines prefer the the Japanese quads, can you say XENOPHILE? A Xenophile is a person who love things that are made somewhere else. Like Japan for instance. They must have bought stock in the Japanese companies to give them such rave reviews. I also note that Bruce Oglive (sp?) is always around when they do the tests of their beloved Hondas. Why do you suppose that is? Just because Bruce works for Honda, surely that doesn't have ANYTHING to do with it. Surely Honda wouldn't be giving out "ringers" (a specially prepared stock factory machine) for them to test.

If I understand correctly, the test between the 300EX and the 2x4 Scrambler will be next month and probably a joke at best. Sure the Scrambler has better (and more) suspension than the 300EX. Sure the Scrambler has twice the horsepower of the 300EX. Sure the Scrambler turns faster lap times at the HONDA test track than the 300EX. But the 300EX will win because it has the all important "LOWER CENTER OF GRAVITY" and "BETTER FIT AND FINISH" than the Scrambler. Gee, just what I look for in a SPORT quad! It all happened a couple of years ago in 4WA. It turns out that the Polaris 400 Sport HAD faster lap times than the 300EX but they still gave the win to the 300EX, go figure!

Getting an HONEST test report from 4 Wheel Honda Lovers Action and Japanese Dirtwheels is as scarce as a new fast Honda.
