Seems like the ITP or douglas wheels would take about 25 lbs off a scrambler. Anyone done this and noticed better acceleration. Seems like taking 5% off the weight off the quad, especially unsprung weight in the wheels (forgive me, I used to race cars for a long time) would provide at least 5% better acceleration, better fuel economy and a snappier throttle.
Thoughts...

In theory you are corrent. However I went with .190's on 6 ply XC's so I don't think I lost any weight there.

On the 400 there are several other items that could be removed/lightened to reduce unsprung weight, and even rotating mass, all of which I have done. I'm not too familiar with the SC500's, but dont see all of those items inof themselves making that much of a difference, without some motor work as well.

I'd love to weigh my 400, I'd guess it has to be somewhere around 375-385 wet?

I put a set of .190 Douglas on my 500. 10X10 in the rear and 12X8 in front. The big difference is the off-set of the wheels. With the 12"in front you basicly have no tire roll in corners this helps in handling very much and oh yea the off-set is wider so like B.Labonte would say wider is better. Don't get the wrong idea it's not a DS650 wide but about +2" in front and 1.5" rear compared to stock. If you want to take a look e-mail me and I will forward you a pic.

Sep1...what kind of tires and size did you get? Do they seem to protect wheels better than stock? I need wheels and tires, but I ride in very rocky areas. My main concern is getting tires that protect the wheels more than stock. I sure would like to see a pic if you can...ferdee9@aol.com THANKS

The tires in front are 489's. They were the ony one I can find that were 23X 8 X 12, so I got them by defalt. I would have perfered somthing like a bear claw. I had bear claws on my 95 SCR and they worked great, the size (22 x 8 x 10) this size will fit the stock wheel. The rears are All-Traks. Great tire for everthing snow, mud, and hard pack. I'll send a pic as soon as I get a chance. If you are wondering why I went with the 12" in front this was by defalt also. My friend bought a set of 25" Bi's and Tri -claws with the .190 wheels. He was trading in the bike for a new one so he sold me the tire kit for $150.00. If any one is thinking about going to a 25" tire on a SCR, I will give you pro's and con's of this option. So anyway I had the wheels already so I just needed to find tires that would work with them. The 12" works great in front for handeling( no tire roll), but you choices are limited.

If you have a 01' or newer then you already have aluminum wheels they just aren't polished aluminum they are painted. Why they did this is totally beyond me. If you look at the specs on a 2000 and 20001 then you will see where a 01' is around 20 lbs. lighter.

Wow, Thanks. I didn't know they were already aluminum. You saved me a bunch of money. I was just trying to lighten it up, I'm not concerned with that look really.

I just checked. They ARE Steel. Magnets don't stick to aluminum.

ITP on the way.

I believe only the 400 Scram had alum wheels and the 500 still have the steel. On the Polaris web site, the features of the 400 is alum rims, bumper and floor boards, yet none of this is said in the 500 features.

Some scrams have aluminum, some have steel. The 2000's were supposed to come with aluminum wheels, floorboards and front bumper cage. All steel parts on mine.
Best thing to do if you buying a new one, go through the dealers stock with a magnet and find one with aluminum parts.
I loved the piece of label tape on the Scrambler X's that said "CUSTOM ALUMINUM WHEELS" on the stock silver painted aluminum wheels....
