Anyone have a gray clutch cover?

My wife's 2000 Scrambler came with a gray clutch cover. Has anyone else seen these? What is the deal with them other than it seems less brittle in the material used to make it.
It looks terrible and I am planning to paint it black. Has anyone else had success with the paint sticking? It's rough plastic, not smooth like on my '99.
