I just bought a stock 2002 500 scrambler. I've been told that I need to put a clutch kit in, or add new springs. Wha is a clutch kit and what will it do for my machine. What will adding springs do for it. Should I just keep it stock? If I were to add a clutch kit how hard of a job is it to do.
Any info would be great, thanx gotta run

You dont NEED a clutch kit if you are happy with the stock poerformance. A clutch kit will change the off idle engagement and change the total upshift of the machine. It will make it quicker off the line and reach top speed quicker. You wont notice much on the top end without a pipe and jetting. You notice more on the 2 strokes. If you have never done anything with the clutch before then i would not attempt to do it. If you want better take off then go with a pimary spring. This is easy to do but the secondary is more difficult if you have never done it. It all depends on what performance change you would like. Either way it will not hurt the bike and does not need to be done unless springs are bad but 2002 is very unlikely. The 500 is a great reliable machine. If it is having clutch problems then it might just need maintenance. Belt, Allignment and cleaning.

Start with a primary clutch spring change and see if you like the way it up shifts. Then if you like it change the secondary spring for the back shift.get that set where you like it and if you want a faster upshift change the weights in the primary.Still want better backshift go with a different angled helix. It can get complicated but once you know what does what and what YOU want out of your machine it is not that bad.
