1999 Scrambler 400 - good/bad?
I bought mine last summer and so far I love it. The power is awesome in stock form and even better when you start to modify it. The automatic is great - I'll never go back to a manual shift again. Best of all, it's a 2 stroke and it sounds cool. Some complaints people have about them is the single lever brakes (I personally don't mind it) and the heavy weight compared to other models. It ways about 100 lbs. more than my Wolverine did according to factory specs. (I think Yamaha may have fuged there figures), but the think feels lighter when cornering and jumping. It either actually is lighter or just has a better balance of weight. Also, the stock pistons are known to get loose in the bore over time (as most 2 stroke pistons do). But, the factory piston can have pieces of the skirt break off if it gets loose enough causing expensive bottom end repairs. Mine began making noise recently so I have it torn aprt now for a rebuild with a Wiseco piston. While I'm at it, I had Bubba port my cylinder for me. So buy this weekend, I should have a 60+ horsepower screamer on my hands. I can't wait!

I have one also. A 4WD. I really like the Scrambler for trail riding and playing. I am however in the market for a Ute, prolly a Sportsman. My Scrambler is the 400 two stroker. I would like to trade it off on a 4 stroker b/c I don't want to mod it, just ride it. Like he said, they do have piston issues. Might be a good idea just to change them every yr or two depending on how much you ride.
When I bought mine it was a baskets case. (read more than one basket) The piston had dropped a skirt and took out the case. I bought a new case and piston and put on new tires and rode on! I haven't rode mine much since all new, so mine has a long way to go yet.
I just sold a Warrior this weekend. I had them both for a cpl yrs, although I don't ride much. However, just to compare, sometimes I would jump off one and onto the other. I am guessing the Scrambler to weigh in 150# more? But in handling I couldn't tell it at all. Jumping it may be a diff story. But climbing small hills and such was all the same as far as handling was concerned. And the Scrambler fits my 6' build better. Plus the 4WD goes places the other only dreams of. LOL!
A 4 stroker machine prolly weighs a little more yet.

A 400 Scrambler is a great machine. Very reliable if you take care of it. Oil and lube as needed. And if you need a rush of speed, you can get lot's of hp really cheap. HPD can hook you up with 10-12hp for $500. But I'll wait for some of the more experienced modders to hop into this thread and enlighten you further...

I had mine since 98, modified it & have ridden it very hard since then even on MX tracks, a lot of jumping. I never had any problems w/ it & it is faster than I care to go. I have no problems w/ Banshees' 250R, DS650 etc. I think it's a great machine especially modified & having 4wd ta boot is just icing on the cake. The 4wd lets me ride all winter when the sport quads are hibernating. Many times my friends are stuck on hill climbs where I can go up half way, stop & park it, help them, get back on mine & take off w/ 4wd in the middle of the hill, no problem. Then there's it's mud abilities. Stock is ok if your just putting around but not much get up & go compared to all the other fast machines out there. I mainly ride w/ sport quads. Hope this helps & good luck.
