I just got a 1989 lt230 4 stroke I need help it was rode without a air box or air filter. For how long I don't now. It runs good when I can get it started.. I never owned a quad or a suzuki I was wonder what I meant have to do to make it start with just a couple of kicks? I only way we can get it to fire is tow it or run it down a hill pop the clutch.. Would that be a carb gummed up problem. I was told to it was bored to a 300cc would that make a diffances..

Well no air filter or box could mean the intake valve worn down some causing bad starts due to sand and dirt getting into the valve. Could be a old dirty carb these bikes are 20+ years old.

Not sure if they ever had a big bore that big but i would start be cleaning carb getting a foam filter of some sort. taking the carb apart and clean the pilot jet and main jet.

See if they upped the jets when they did the bore job. Stock jetting is 20 pilot and 112.5 for the main.

HOpe this helps ya some.

you have no idea how angry i am at my 230. im really close to pushing the bitch into a lake and saying fu*k it. all i do is put money into it, and all it does is need more and more and more. i don't why know why people hang onto these old things anymore.

@hunter71495

Well what does it need now? I know it seems the same way with mine at times but all in all they are a really reliable little machine that do require a lot of upkeep and preventive maintenance. I'm looking at two of them right now lol. Another "s" and a "e" for the wife.

Can i put a 250s head on the 230s with a big bore kit? if so what will the CC become. I know with a 250 head it will become a 290. Also i can't remember if i need a shorter crank rod, or a longer one.

Okay first i went out a my battery was dead. Went borrowed a neighbors charger, charged it for like 2 hours just to realize my negative fell off the frame, so it was a wasted 2 hours. Then put it back on for 2 hours and went to go and start her. Nothing... crank, crank, crank doesn't start. so i sprayed some starter fluid in the air box, and went to fire her up and nothing again. Just keeps turning over but won't fire up. I replaced the spark plug before i charged it and nothing. I have spark on the spark plug. Yes it has gas, yes it has air, yes it has spark. Whats wrong with it???

Hey folks, figured I'd drop in and say hey! Hope the Vault has been working out well for everyone!

Its averaging about 75 hits per day! Unbelievable!

Since its birth:
32,000 hits
240,000 page views
19,000 unique visitors!

INSANE!

Here's an update on my garage:

2012 Chevrolet Sonic: The Ford Exploder stayed true to its name but I was able to get out from under it!

1999 Polaris Sportsman 500 4x4: This bad boy is on the auction block as 4x4s get some mean coin during this season in MN. Looking to see what I can get on a trade. Hoping for a DS450. Had offers from a 05 Honda 450R and an 06 Predator 500 modded to the moon.

(Pic is from our incredible Moab trip this summer!!!)

1982 Honda XL80S: Last and least is this little trooper. Got it running and its a blast, but there's no title and the MN DNR loves me; so it doesn't get used much.
