3' travel sucks! the rear shock i have helps very much, but is old. So in adding the length i need to the swingarm to use a 300 ex rear shock. It bolts in but sits way high. Now for the front im either goin with 400 ex or blaster shocks. Im using an old frame as a mockup goin to figure out how i need everything and then use them to make a jig to make a set of a arms. as for gearing 12 41 sucs, iim using it right now and its just way to low. I can start out in third without ridin the clutch and usually climb pretty desent hills in 3-4 gear. I know i seen somewhere the 230 250 r and the z400 had same bolt pattern 4 sprocket.

Yeah, 12/41 is too low. But the quad came with 22 inch tires. The 250s came with 20's and had a 12/39. The 12/41 with 22's and the 12/39 with 20's is exactly the same ratio.

You should leangthen the swingarm 4 inches and that will set the rear back down some for the 300 shock to work. If you can make a-arms, a swingarm will be a piece of cake.

Hey guys, Im new to the boards and I just have a question. I just picked up a 1988 lt230E for my son and I was wondering if these are the same motor as the "S" other then no clutch. Im looking for a few mods for it but in the 59 pages ive read so far of this thread Ive gotten a few ideas. Just checking if mods for the "S" will work for the "E"

Thanks, Dave

Welcome to the board! 59 pages!!? Back when I started there were only 30 something and I thought that was a lot!

The engine is pretty much the same... There may be some differences in carb size, port size n shape, exhaust, etc,,, since the E is a ute and the S is a sport. All the basic internal parts should be the same though. What mods did you have in mind?

Well my son is only 16 but is 5 11" and 230lbs lol so Im lookin more for lows to mid power ranges as we do alot of mountain riding and climbing is a must. Ive read alot about the gear ratios and flatside carbs. But I havnt had the time to count the teeth on his stock sprockets yet and Im not sure I wanna spend the $149.00 on a flatside until I know if Im buying the right one for his bike.
He has a K&N on it and we run with the airbox lid off and I did have to lower the clip a little to accommodate the filter but now Im not sure what the best bang for the buck is. Ive been looking at pipes but the Cobra and DG are so dang loud and from what I have seen in the past, dont seem to offer the boost in power I was looking for well not like the Supertrapp I have on my bike anyway. Is there any other type of pipes for these bikes other then those 2 brands? And will the pipes that fit the "S" fit the "E". Right now he is running 20" tires on the back and thats where we think we are gonna stay.

Any ideas are greatly appreciated.

Oh boy.... Umm... Not sure about the exhaust differences between the E and the S. I would think a slip on would fit anything though. I still run the stock exhaust (highly modified though), so I'm not much of one to know what is out there, but I hear everything is kinda on the loud side.

I'm fairly sure the carb you have is 24mm. The stock carb for an S is 26mm. The flatslides you've been reading about are 28mm. Some guys have reported success with 30mm roundslides.... So, 24 seems small. The 230 has a lot of bottom end because the stroke is 67mm (bigger than most quads) while the bore is only 66mm. That's not a high revving combo,,, its designed for grunt. Going up in carb size will get you some midrange and topend, but will cost you some low end (but you should be able to afford it).

The biggest bang for the buck is probably the KN with a bigger carb. Either that or a high comp piston. OR both! Raising compression is the name of the game. However you can accomplish that will get you more power. More air/fuel into the cylinder through bigger carbs and less restrictive filers makes for higher compression. Less restrictive exhausts with more scavenging makes for more air/fuel which makes for more compression. Any bright ideas that gets more air/fuel in works. The problem your are going to run into with mountain riding is 4th gear. I do a lot of mountain riding and I'm either revving 3rd to the moon, or bogging 4th. 13/39 with 20 inch tires seems to be the consensus, but I think that's just because nobody can find a 38 for the back. Even 13/39 is still a bit low. If I had to guess, I would say you have a 12/41, which is really low.... Especially with 20's on the back.

Ive heard that the "S" are geared low but im not to sure about the "E" ill have to count the teeth today. He can hardly get the front tires off the ground when attepting to pull wheelies which wasnt a problem with his TRX200sx. So what im thinking is maybe slap a 26mm "S" carb providing all the linkage works with mine and maybe dropping a tooth on the front sprocket. Then if I can find a pipe I dont need earplugs to use ill pick that up as well.

Ok I found out that my 230E has a 26mm carb like the "S" but it has 11-41 gears for the stock ratio. SO, now Im considering the 28mm flatslide and going up in the rear to a 42 tooth. Im guessing that will give him all the climbing power he needs for slow steep climbing.
