Default 85 to 88 Suzuki LT230S Quadsport help.

Not being able to pop wheelies does NOT sound like a quad from the 230 family... For sure! Those things are the most wheelie happy quads since trikes! Something else is wrong. Do you have a way to measure the compression (ie a compression tester)? IF not, take the spark plug out and put your thumb over the hole and turn the engine over with the throttle wide open. The pressure should blow your thumb off smartly. Does it burn oil? Is there white smoke coming out of the pipe?

11/41 is WAY too low. My bud put an 11 on the front of his and he starts off in 4th gear spinning the tires! The last sprocket I ran was a 14 on the front and I could still probably pull a stump!

How do you know the carb is a 26? My service manual says it has a 24. And http://www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_atv_parts.htm says the needle begins in "4" while the S carb has a needle that begins in "5". 5 is a longer needle. But if you're going to a 28 anyway, it doesn't matter.

You should know with the 28 you will have to get a new needle, main jet, and pilot jet. That carb comes way too lean and all you will be able to do is idle until you replace the jets and needle. Plus the fuel inlet is on the opposite side, so you'll need extra hose. The good part is everybody has already done the hard work for you,,, you just have to replace the parts is all.

It sounds to me that your quad is not even running as well as a new stock one,,, nevermind one that has extra modified power. 20yrs is a long time for the rings to get worn down and I bet you have a low compression. Have you considered boring it and putting a 10.25:1 wiseco in it? You'll have no trouble with wheelies then, lol. Figure about $250 for a bore job n piston.

I tested the compression and its 174. I have the Clymer manual and on page 145 it refers to the carb specs and it only has 2 types. They refer to the first as being "Shaft Driven bikes" and show you the specs on them which is 24mm. Then they refer to the "Chain Driven bikes" and refer to them as having the 26mm. Thats all the sources that i have for one vs. the other. As far as stock sprocket specs if you go here www.rockymountainatv.com then pull up the machine click on sprockets then the "show specs" tab it shows 11-41 as stock for the "E" and 12-41 for the "S" model. Im not afraid of swapping jets and what not I had to do all that with my bike.

Yeah, the chain/shaftdrive carb thing does make sense... It may have a 26, who knows... Either way, 28 is better, but only if you're going to rev it out some. Don't need a high cfm carb for grunting around in the mud and lugging up hills.

I've seen worse than 174. Mine was over 200 last time I tested, but I have the high comp piston. I can't find any specs in my books for what the compression should be, but I'm guessing 174 is ok. So long as its not burning oil.

What's the altitude where you live?

the e model also has c centrifical(sp) clutch which causes slippage, and also some have racks and such. I also believe the e is heaver with the starter and battery and the draw of power on engine for the altornator(sp)
