Default LT80 starter solenoid

Can't get my sons 2001 LT80 started unless I run a hot wire from the battery to the starter. If I try to use the starter button the relay just clicks. I figured the relay was no good and replaced it but same thing. Since the starter will work when you jump it, does that mean it is the solenoid? Could it be the actual starter switch? If it's the solenoid, is my only option to replace the whole starter or can it be repaired? TIA!

Just to be clear, you are also making sure the safety switch that is activated by the parking brake on the foot brake is being made? that will not allow you to start, not sure if it will allow the relay to be pulled in or not, been years since I worked on my sons LT80, got rid of it long ago. I'm sure Jack (LT80 on forum) will catch this post and let you know for sure.

I am not sure what you mean. I am definitely putting the foot pedal saftey switch in the right position so that it should start but I haven't looked at or otherwise tested that switch to make sure it is functioning correctly. I guess I should.

I was just not sure what function the foot switch plays, if it prevents power to the relay, or power to the starter, does the relay come on if the foot switch is left open? if it does, and the foot switch is controlling power to the starter, you may have a bad foot brake switch, but as I said, I'm not sure exactly how it is wired in, maybe google for a wiring schematic of the LT80 to see what components are between the start button and the starter? keep us posted on what you find.

The starter switch has been known to go bad.
If you push the button and it clicks, I'd think the button would be good.
Sorry, the electric part is my weak point.
The newer models have a push button type of breaker under the right side of the rear fender. Maybe try pushing that.
