Default Need help with 5-spd auto clutch

I'm kind of stumped with this one.
1985 Lt250EF. unknown working condition beforehand.

it had regular engine oil in it. flushed and cleaned the engine very well, pump screen, new oil filter, opened both sides to drain and clean etc.

Rebuilt the clutch with new plates, steels and springs (barnett and EBC).

Can't get the clutch release adjustment to work correctly. if i go to stock spec of tightening the stud to resistance then backing off 1/8th turn, it won't shift at all and the stud is barely on the lock nut by 1-1/2 threads.

to get it to shift, i have to turn the stud pretty far out, leaving the apply plate and ball roller plate quite loose --1/8th to 1/4" gap to the outer pressure plate on the basket.

with that setting, it shifts all the gears fine, but slips pretty badly in low and won't pull any incline at all.

tried adding another steel to the center of the stack--no change.

I've checked everything over at least 1/2 dozen times, nothing is missing.

there are some plate marks on the fingers, nothing really deep.

Got to be something really simple that i'm overlooking --i hope.

Maybe not so much the basket set but the centrifugal???
de-glazed the bell, used brake cleaner, then scuffed the shoes and soaked them in new oil.

any input is appreciated. missed first race of the season because of this.

pretty much the same clutch basket setup as in the 230s and 250-S

turns out the barrett steels are too thick. swapped back to the originals and it cleared up the clutch apply plate issue. I may try one or two of the barrets in the stack to see if that increases the pressure and firms up the shifts even more.

been laying with gear ratios, had a lot of slippage with my initial setup.

little video of one of my tests, i pretty much stick it in a big red oak blow-down root hole then see if it will crawl out of it --if it can't, it's winch time ....

This old LT is one tough brute, with a 5.5 ratio and 24" tall tires (800+ pounds weight) i can still crawl up just about anything i have to test it on, top end runs to 45 or 50mph.

anyone have an idea what the rev limit on these old things is? at 3700 it sounds like it's ready to pop its cork!
