New to the forum and I would appreciate any expert reply.

I recently bought a 2002 Suzuki Eiger 400 4x4 foot shift from craigslist. I paid 1800 for it and thought I had a pretty good deal. The guy said that all it needed was a cable that connected the Low, High, Reverse lever to the transmission to get the High and Reverse to work (stuck in Low gear). So I figured $100 tops and it would be a great 4x4. However, after taking it to the mechanic he said that it is definitely not just the cable and possibily something in the transmission has broken a tooth or something.

I'm already 1800 deep and I'm not sure if I should fix the problem or would I be better off trying to sell it at a loss? Has anyone had this problem? Maybe I could find a whole new transmission? Does anyone know approximately how much it would cost to have the transmission rebuilt?

I’ve worked on a few of these transfer boxes and it was a different fault each time. They are fairly easy to repair, provided it isn’t the gearbox mainshaft that has gone, because they are in the alternator case. They are swine for bits dropping off when you split the case and it isn’t that obvious where washers etc, go back. I once spent a couple of hours looking for a missing washer, mentioned in the official manual, only to find it had been deleted on post 03 Eigers. Find someone who knows these engines, and get them to split the case, only then will you know how much the repair will cost.

 

If the repairs ARE in the gearbox mainshaft thats in the alternator case would that have something to do with the alternator not charging the battery? Because the battery isn't being recharged either.

 

Sorry, I see what I have written was a bit ambiguous. The low/high/reverse gearbox is in the alternator case. I think it unlikely that a bit has damaged the alternator but get the charging system checked before splitting the case as, if the alternator is faulty, you can get it replaced at the same time. What I meant about the mainshaft is that if it is damaged you have to dismantle the five speed gearbox as well, in order to remove it.
