Default 86 lt230s

Ok so i just got back my lt230s quadsport. Its an 86 kickstart. Now i just replaced the clutch and exhaust from header to muffler. I had the carb cleaned by a mechanic buddy of mine. So since i got it its had alil bit of a hard start. I have yet to replace the air filter but have new oil in it and new plug. So anyway it wants to start you here it wanting to turn over from the sound it. It takes about 20 to 25 kicks to get it started and once it starts it back fires like crazy when you hit the gas and shoots out a flame. Any suggestions? Could the carb be putting out to much gas or cause the air filter may b dirty?

How is the carb worn out? If your air filter is dirty, clean it. Backfiring and shooting out flame is usually a lean condition, see if it persists after fixing the carb and weak spark issue. Also, never hurts to check valve clearances as that can be a major contributor to hard starting.

Well it was weak spark. It jus needed a coil pack. But now that i have it running and all it doesnt back fire or miss i jus blows white smoke when i hit the throttle. Does that mean my rings r shot? But if my rings were shot doesnt it blow blue smoke? And i found alil oil in the air box so it could be rings i suspect?

Probably the valve needle, plus I think there may be a gasket or 2 on the stock carb. Not much to really wear out on a carb. The jets don't move, the rest of the machine will be junk before you can wear those out.

As for the smoke, does it smell like burning oil? It is air and oil cooled, so you aren't burning anti freeze. Probably rings, or valve seals. If you have a crankcase breather vented to the airbox, then worn rings can pressurize the crankcase and push oil into that airbox.

No it doesnt smell like oil jus white smoke and im not sure if its oil or air cooled. But i know my exp as a car mechanic is tht white smoke is anti freeze and blue is oil and this has no blue oil even with the throttle pinned jus steady white smoke. And the shop wants to charge 400$ to have the top end done so idk if i jus wanna sell the damn thing or actually hav it done

It is air cooled. Suzuki likes to throw in some oil cooling too, but now that I think of it, I don't think the sport had any 3xternal cooling for oil. Not that it matters in your case. Could you have some contaminated fuel?

Yes, drain the gas tank and carb, put in fresh. Problem solved hopefully.
