05 Suzuki Ozark Smoke Bomb
#1
Hey guys, just picked up a an Ozark in rough, and I do mean RUFF shape. Cracked frame, cylinder head and cam cover destroyed, plastics painted with metal flake, rims bent up, no key-twisted wires, carb full of god knows what, engine crankcase full of water. Stripped it down and welded frame, new ignition switch, cylinder head, cam, and cam cover. Plastics cleaned, oil changed, new battery and clean carb. The thing fired right up! runs nice, shifts a little clunky but all gears. Good compression, idles good and lots, lots, lots of smoke. If you start it and just idle, no smoke, but if you rev it up...WOW. It is burning massive amounts of oil. Question, can you have good compression rings and bad oil rings at the same time? Could something else make smoke like this when revved? I am going to pull the engine back apart and and check ring gap and see if a ball hone and new rings will fix it. I have a few Yammy 250's, Timber Wolf and Bear Tracker and the Suzuki is definitely a more refined machine.

If the previous owner hacked it that bad, check it has the right dipstick, as the wrong oil level could cause the smoking. Check the engine breather system is OK and, if you do need to take the top end apart again, check valve stem seals and that there isn't a fault in the new head leading to oil getting into the ports as well as checking rings. It is dead easy for part of that oil control ring to "catch", as you lower the cylinder on, and you may not notice.
