URGENT Zilla help needed, please
#1
First, let me start by telling you about a noise the motor has started making.
Its a tick tick (VERY fast, consistant with RPM). It sounds as if its coming from the flywheel area. The flywheel seems to have no play, or VERY VERY little anyway, so I dont think its the crank bearings. They seem fine. Anyway, my Zilla is now (same time as noise started) acting like it has a jetting problem. It is cutting out under WOT and wont rev worth crap. It is NOT the jetting though, I know this for a fact from a diagnostic ride and testing today. (besides, it ran great with the same jetting the other day)
COULD this possibly be one of the electronic things behind the flywheel has backed out a screw or something, and moved into contact with the flywheel, hence the noise. This could explain my cutting out problem. It does seem like an electronic/spark problem.
Does this sound feasable?
Thanks people, im supposed to go to Glamis this weekend. "urgent"

couple things to look at... The '87 models flywheels are prone to failure. Not sure if the '88 would be similar before they updated them.
where the hub is riveted to the wheel... the rivets sometimes shear off causing the two pieces to separate.. this usually takes out the stator when it comes flying apart.
when you take the cover off, are there any rust streaks on the flywheel? (from the center out)
You may be in the early stages of this happening. It could also cause the ignition/timing to act strange.
otherwise,
If you do have crank bearing problems (hard to detect unless you really jerk the crank/flywheel around) the seals could be losing crank case pressure, causing it to lean out... usually this doesn't last long before you smoke the piston.
It would be well worth your time to get a flywheel puller, and look underneath the flywheel... if it is rubbing on something, you'd see it clearly. You could also examine the back side of the hub while you're in there.
Hope this helps.

Yes the flywheel could be coming apart. I bought a 1989 not running once because of this problem. Somtimes the ignition pickup comes loose too(on the outside of the flywheel). Your bearing are probly still OK as long as your motor is idleing down.
