My son's '87 LT80 suddenly doesn't want to idle. It cut-out on him a couple of times on the trail, and the only way he could get it started again was to use the choke. We got it home and I cleaned the air filter and put a new spark plug in (old plug was black). Fired it up last night, but once the engine got warm it just would not idle. The only way it will idle is with the choke on. I couldn't even adjust the idle screw because it wouldn't stay running long enough. Any suggestions??

this may be as simple as a carb cleaning, but I suspect that the piston may be wore out.check the compression

Well, I brought the LT80 to my local dealer and the problem seems to have been a couple of air leaks. There was an air leak between the carb and the reed valve, and another between the reed valve and the cylinder. They also cleaned-up and adjusted the carb. Just thought I'd pass this this information along.
