It started fine and ran good for awhile but when I tried to put it in 4 wheel drive it stalled and wouldn't start for a bit. After it sat a few minutes it started but when I tried to put it in 4 wheel drive again it stalled and wouldn't start for some time. Its got about 37 hrs and 230 miles (give or take) just broken in. I haven't had the first service yet, do these wheelers have an auto-shutoff if the oil gets low??
I heard about a faulty servo motor in the Kodiak 400, something to do with the 4x4 system but would that cause the wheeler to stall??

please help, I don't want to be stranded again...

anyone else have this problem?? What else could have caused it to stall, I assumed it was the 4x4 system because when I tried to put it in 4x4 it stalled.

 

i got my 04 kodiak 450 4 days ago and everything was running great. I went out for a quick ride in the back yard and i wanted to make sure that everything was work like it should so i pushed the 4x4 button and everything ran great but when i hit the diff lock button the quad sputtered and stalled. i started if back up and tried again it stalled again. I was pissed this thing is brand new and its allready having problems. I went inside and calmed down, then about 2 hours later i tried again and everything was working great so i dont know what it is but i'm going to the dealership tomorrow and gunna find out what the problem is i hope i can find out some information that can help the both of us.

 

Great, not great that your wheeler stalled but great that its not just mine/me. One guy told me the reason why it stalled was because there are little ***** in the gas cap that seal the air vent in case of a rollover to prevent gas from spilling out and that sometimes when the wheeler gets bounced around the ***** get stuck covering the vent which causes it to stall. But mine seemed to stall after I put it in 4x4 (maybe it was diff lock??) not after riding around over rough terrain.

Mine is a new 2003 with 30 hrs on it. This has happened to me 3 times now. Everytime trying to engage the Diff Lock. I to would like to know "what is up with that"

 

i dont know much about yamaha but does netural have nething to do with it.

 

Just a thought- Did everyone have them in a low gearing when trying to set the diff. lock? Doesn't diff. lock only work in low gear? The brand new 2004's have a button (left side of bars) so the diff. lock can be used in a high gearing. (At least this is what a salesman told me when I considered buying one.)

 

The 450s have a reve limiter for the diff lock. If the diff lock is not engaged (the light on the display blinks "diff lock") it will sputter until the diff is locked in (the light on the display spots blinking) Also, if you drive over 22 mph with the diff locked it will sputter. It's in the owner’s manual towards the front.

 

Diff. lock works in high gear but the speed is limited just like in reverse (also limited in low gear too.)

Anyone find out what this could be?? I was out riding deep in the woods the other day and was scared to use diff. lock because I didn't want to get stranded, I shouldn't have to worry about my new wheeler leaving me stranded! [img]i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif[/img]
I hope to stop at a Yamaha dealer some time this week and ask if they know anything about this.

 

It is all in your owners manual. Like LTT said. I just read it. All make sence now.

 

the diff. lock does have a limiter in it intil the diff. lock is fully locked.as far as I can tell its limited to 3 mph . when you engage the diff lock turn the handle bars back and forth to get it to lock in better, once its locked in you are still limited to 22 mph in high or low gear. As far as the machine stalling and not re-starting mine has never done that so mabey this won't help.
