MWQ you'd probably have a ball up at Miami in that case. Going to be there with the CATW gang (rescue, mstrquad, blackshot (he pops up from time to time but main a lurker), powerstroke01) the first weekend in April if you're interested. Going up tomorrow to check out what the snow is doing. Should be at 5000'. Also looking for a road to a peak. Yeah, spend a ton of time looking for one little road to the top of a hill. LOL.

I have been thinking about miami in april. What is the camping like? I drove thru there one time when I was going to wawona in yosemite. I was on a main road for a while and didnt find that much room for camping. What is it like for m/c's? I know you dont ride one but do you see many m/c trails? Thanks, MWQ

Here is the link from the california OHV website. http://ohv.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=1192 The place is awesome! I ride there in the summer all the time...It does get hot there sometimes but you usually get that nice wind that goes through there to cool you off. The place really is the best place I have riden out here and is extremely fun. Im sure others will agree with me.

MWQ, there's 65 miles or so of trails (exclusive of attached fire roads). Technically the name is Miami Motorcycle Trails. Everyone just calls it Miami or Miami Creek (flows through there). Camping is either dispersed or primitive. We are planning on staying at Lone Sequoia. It's relatively flat and has a pit toilet and like 2 tables. That's pretty much it. There's no water available, but I guess you could boil the creek water in a pinch.

Miami Trails Pics

There's nothing really there of the trails, except for one. If you like it technical, you'll love it there. Trails are generally 40" wide maintained (maintained up there is a bad word, but close enough and the width wouldn't be an issue on an MC), but plenty wide for quads (some are little narrower, but not really an issue). It's usually about 70% MCs up there. There's only one trail (MMTB south of Kamook) that I know of that is impassable. It's pretty much a vertical section that is rutted out. Most of the trails are easiest to take going down towared the creek. They are just too rutted to climb up. Even MCs have trouble on some.

They aren't hill climb style of trails (like you'll find at Carnegie). I haven't been to Clear Creek so I can't compare. But I've heard they are kinda the same. Elevation is 4000'. Locals say that it really isn't worth the time to rejet for the elevation. Just depends on how close you like your bike to perfect. Depending on conditions, we may go to 7000'. But I'm thinking that with all the snow this year, that won't happen.

Pretty much will need to "pack in" (fresh) water & firewood. I'm going to talk to the FS about wood up there. Whether or not we can gather, or what. Do bring along water to put out campfire (creek water would probebly be just fine and the creek should REALLY be moving then) as well as shovel and ax. Or whatever is on the fire permit. In the summer it's low enough to be in the no-campfire zone. But make sure you have a campfire permit. They are available in Oakhurst on your way up or anywhere else in CA that you can get a permit.

If you went through on your way to Wawona you may have saw the Miami signs just north of the 4000' mark on Hwy 41 (if you went via 41, "Southern Yosemite Entrance"). You can barely even see the riding area from there. The only way to know is the signs, or if someone is staged right at Hwy 41 & 6S41 (south entrance) or 41 & 6S24 (north entrance). We barely see cars on 41, but can hear them if we stop. There are some easy trails (Green) but most of those have at least one harder section for anyone who is really new.

I just really have a feeling you'll love it just from you say about the kinda riding you like. It's not packed. 20 people there is a lot. Most day-use stage at Kamook. And most people are day use from Fresno, Merced, etc.

BRW, Thanks for the pics. I did go up 41 on my way in. Is that the way you go in? I talked to the wife and she was up for a new place to camp so we are planning on being there. The wife has the week before off so we would most likely be going there thurs nite. We are talking about 4-2/3 right? I will bring some fire wood and am pretty sure i have a fire permit good until 4-05, not sure. Always have plenty of water with us. We camp out of a tent trailer so we are pretty much self contained. No shower, but everything else. Looking forward to meeting you. MWQ

MWQ I believe mstrquad (maybe blackshot) is going up on Thursday night (3/31). I'm going to change my vacation sched. at work and if I can take Fri off and go up for the whole day on Friday (i.e. leave Thursday night).

I go up 41 as it goes out of Fresno. I'm assuming you'll be coming in like 140 from Merced to Mariposa and 49 to 41 (Oakhurst) and up.

Fire permits are usually good for the calendar year. At least the two I've gotten have been that way. Just need a CA fire permit. Of course they are free at pretty much any forestry fire dept. or ranger station.

Brodie, I keep forgetting to call the HQ in Clovis to see if I can get a Miami Trails on white paper so I can scan it (and post as a PDF). They always copy onto colored paper. I have the map on purple paper....didn't scan to well. Here's one somebody did that's somewhat OK. But it uses road numbers instead of names. Not sure where he got it. There are sometimes Maps up there in a couple of spots, but that's usually in the summer. I can go to the HQ in Clovis and get maps whenever. I have one or two hear but I think they've been screwed up.Map of Miami Trails

I will grab several copies from the HQ before the ride if they can't get me a clear copy.

Somewhere I have a reduced size (8.5x5.5) laminated copy of the map. Maybe if I can dig that out I can scan that.

Sounds great BRW, Yes I do go 140 to 49 to 41. I will need some simple directions to get to where you want to camp. Nothing too serious, I have benn wandering around the national forests for years camping. I got a fire permit 4-04 in twain harte, pretty sure it is in trailer if not i will get another one, no big deal. I am not sure how many will be coming with us but at least the wife and youngest son and possibly one of his friends. The oldest son and his new wife are thinking about it too. We are all dirt bike riders except for my wifes quad. Looking forward to it, even getting a little excited now.
