CALIFORNIA Quad Riders report here.....
#1261
We got back from Hungry Valley (Gorman) yesterday . . . I love that place! Just like BudXXX said in an earlier post, the trails have been wonderfully groomed. There's none like them anywhere else. We're so glad Gorman is open and back to business again! At first we stayed at Smith Forks Campground, but then for our last night we switched to Cottonwood because it was much quieter. We've never seen so many water crossings there before - it's great! The scenery is beautiful. We met up with some friends who had never been there before and it is now their favorite place to ride. It's only 119 miles from us so it's not that bad of a drive at all. We came in late Fri night and left Mon morning, so we had a free weekend since the guard gate was closed both times.
BudXXX - Have you tried Coyote Trail? That's another good one, and there's another really nice winding trail near there, but I can't remember what it was called since we did so many. We do Vic's Cat, Antler and Backbone all the time too. Some of those cliffhanger turns freak me out - yikes!

How bad is the Ranger situation out there?

We've been going there for years and have never been bothered by the Rangers. The only thing I've ever see them stop someone for is for riding double or idiots riding without a helmet. They never "visit" your campsite or say anything about noise, etc. We've also never had any of them looking for current stickers, etc., although all of our quads/bikes are up to date. You see their trucks driving around, but that's it, and they're there if someone gets hurt.
The only downside of Hungry Valley is that nothing's changed as far as the many, many people who run their loud @$$ Generac generators. C'mon people!! You spent big money on your toyhaulers - how about spending a little more on a quiet generator that doesn't irritate everyone?? That is just beyond rude. One guy had it running all night . . . that's why we moved to the other campground.
It was VERY windy there this weekend too, but the trails were so nice that it made up for it.

I'll have to get my tires fixed after the ride at the hell hole (Stoddard Valley) before I can go out again. Besides I have the axle out doing the bearing repacking and replacing all the seals so that will take up most of my time next weekend. I probably won't have a chance to go to Hungry Valley until the first part of next month...

Gorman is great. I was on a trail and I was stopped by a ranger on a bike. All he wanted to see if I had a spark arrestor on. At the gate they check for green stickers once in a while. I went out to el mirage this past sunday. Its ok not as good as gorman. I think the best trail is badlands.
