Hatfield McCoy trails system
#1
I just got back from Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia. We stayed a week in Gilbert, West Virginia. The town and local area is ATV friendly. We rode the machines on the city street to gas station, restaurants, and even down the state highway for 7 miles back to our lodge. We had a caravan of 12 atv's, and my cousins little kids in it. A highway patrol office came behind us and never said a word.
We went to two of the trail systems, and spent four days riding them. The trails are labeled well and mape shows easy to extreme trails. I have to say that I enjoyed it thoroughly, and especially the locals who were always friendly and pleasant.
Lodge was $60 a night for room (with kitchen) and ended up being an inexpensive week of fun.

I'm glad you had a great time down there (that place is definitely addictive) but you were very lucky when it came to riding down that state hiway for 7 miles. You were out of bounds there I'm pretty sure and you could have been written up. I believe the revised (within the last couple of years) ATV laws state that you cannot ride on a road that has a painted line down the middle unless you ride along the shoulder of the road (no faster than 25 mph).
It is of course still legal in the designated towns (this includes Gilbert). This also includes Pineville between the Castle Rock trailhead and the town itself and I know there are lined roads involved there so that may be an exception to that rule (for now).
Note that they now have 6 trail systems, Indian Ridge (near Beckley) opened up last month. Check the H/M website or quadcrew.com for details...

Indian Ridge is a lot closer to Bluefield than Beckley.
Its approx. halfway between Bluefield and Welch.

This is the contact information where we stayed. It sits right on the entrance to the trail system. Marty is a hoot. Make sure you bring him a license plate for his collection. You can ride on the state highway between town and Browning Fork Trailhouse. Cause Marty said so. haha We had a highway patrolman following us for awhile when we rhode the 7 miles from town to the trailhouse, and he just waved. Everyone is super friendly. Just ride safely and don't show off is all they ask.

Frank -
I like your signature block man, thats funny!
Anyways, is there anything down there in
town of H/M that have FUN things for kids
under 5 yrs old to do? My thinking here is
IF I plan something this summer, get my
family (cousins/nephews etc.) and
maybe while they (family) can watch
our kids, my wife and I can ride. switch
out etc.
Just don't want them (kids) stuck in a room for
3-4 days, need to know if things are close
by or something for their ages to do. IF NOT
then I can arrange a trip with just my
buddies.

Pro Rider,
There isn't much for family to do other than ride. We took three two seaters and let the kids sit behind us. No one said a word. One was around 4 or 5 I think. My cousins wife held her in her arms while they rode thru the trails.
There is a coal mine tour about thirty minutes away, and there are a lot of nice trails you can ride the kids on. But if the wife and children aren't going to ride, go with your buddies. We would have had a much better time with just the guys.
Just not a lot to do other than ride.
