Cams are relatively simple to do yourself. Replacing the valve springs is the hardest part. If you are using a stage 1 hotcam you dont have to worry about that though. They are a worthwhile upgrade by themself, but really make an impact on the performance when combined with headwork and a higher compression piston.

It takes a couple hours, especially when its your first time tearing into the engine. I suggest having a service manual on hand to help you out along the way. I have only installed the stage one on my bike, so I'm not sure about the steps involving the valve springs required for all stage two, webcams, megacycles, etc. Once you have the cam installed and the machine put back together, all you have to do is tune it. Sometimes your current jetting will be plenty, sometimes you will need to alter it. If you go with a higher rev cam then you may have to alter the mains as the power kicks in at higher rpms which usually means higher throttle position.

On a stock engine with filter and pipe - you will be lucky if you get 5HP. Probably more like 3HP. Doing cam, porting, and piston all together you can probably add 10-15HP, depending on how radical you go.
If you use too big of cam without increasing your compression or displacement then you will have NO low-midrange power.
Good Luck

Kenz Cycle Tech Specializes in porting heads all w/ all engine building. Give them a call 1 (480)962-1714. Kenz turned my Raptor into the most unbelievable animal I could imagine!
You will hear arguments that other more talked about names are the way to go but, trust this Astounded customer when i tell you he is a magician! I'm getting more HP out of my motor w/ the stock carbs than others with thousand dollar big pumpers! To put it in perspective = Any builder can put in a 686 piston, cam and, valve springs but, the real differences in HP are made in the porting!!!!
