Would it work? Yes.
Is this a stupid way of doing this if somebody is determined to do it? No, not really.
Is turning the wheels around because they are dinged up a bad idea? Yes.
Did you mention that if he was going to do it he should put the tire valves on opposites sides so as to not put the wheel way out of balance? No.
Here's how I look at it. Because the wheels look bad is a poor reason to do this; it will strain the bearings and spindle and expose the breaks to damage. The right answer is to either live with the dings, try to polish up the rims or buy new rims.
Your idea was very creative and would work but sometimes it's better not to assist another person to do something like this.

I didn't know he was doing it because his wheels were dinged up.
I thought it was to make his front wider.
I did this to my Blaster front end. It didn't hurt anything. But then i know it would of after time. But i didn't care, i was selling it anyway!

And they say girls are vain!!! If you can't keep the thing out of the bushes and from hitting stuff with the rims...well..that gives you three choices:
1) Suffer with your unsightly rims
2) Buy new rims
3) Do your idiotic "repair" and let that be an example to all who see of who you are.
