Default 03 Rappy Starter Help!

Quick question.....Ive got an 03 660R that has always started just fine.....well i stored it for 1.5 years while in college and came back, had to clean out the carb and it runs fine again now....only problem is when I hit the start button and the starting gears start turning, it is as if the gears are missing teeth and it makes the most god awful noise like metal on metal hitting! I have looked at all the visible gears in the starter and they are just fine with no signs of wear, i checked the actual starter itself and the magnet and that appears fine....the only thing that i can possible think of is the gear that is connected to the magnet bar....it has small (easy to wear) teeth on it that might look fine but are just worn enough to cause a slipping of the gear on the magnet. I cant explain it because when I stored the rappy, the starter worked perfectly and now all of this crap! please someone help bc I am at a loss for solutions and the guys at my local yamaha shop just say "ughhhh buy a new starter" which they want to charge $350+ for !!!! HELP! THANKS!!!

It is possible this could be the starter drive I guess they go bad on raptors. From what everybody says if you have to replace it get the L+A one way bearing (starter drive) you can check this out at ripperracing.com

I'm having the same problem. You think this is something I can do easily myself? I called a shop I go to from time to time and they quoted me at $370. That's kind of steep. They also told me they'd replace the one way with another yamaha one and that it's been improved. Anyone heard that?

wow thanks for the help...now when you refer to the starter drive, are you talking about the magnet or something else? also, where can the one way be found on the raptor?

It's called a one way but I call it a starter drive. It's called a one way because it only allows the engine to rotate in one direction. It is on the left side sitting on the bike mounted to the flywheel. Here is another guide I found. one way guide
