Default OLD YAMAHA HELP!

OK, my buddy has a 1993 Yamaha Timberwolf 250. He asked if I could take a look at it for him, because I know more than he knows about engines, but not a whole lot. When I first got it, he said he has already bought a new battery, and a spark plug. When I started to work on it, I poured some gas in my the plug, and did get it to run for about 5 seconds, then it would shut off. Well after a few times of doing that, I ran into a new problem. The starter relay makes a clicking noise when I try and start is. Once in a great will, it will go, but not often, otherwise it just clicks. What will do I have to do? get a new starter relay? I cant try anything else because it dosent have a kick start or pull start. THANKS! schub

Are you sure he has'nt ran the battery down trying to start it?Might hook a battery charger to it just to make sure.Sure does sound like it isnt getting any fuel or maybe the old fuel in the carb needs to be drained.

Thanks, It's not a rat nest I know that, but This weekend I will probably take the carb off and clean it, I have had the battery charger hooked up also. About how much does a starter relay cost?

If the starter relay is clicking you might have a bad starter (or contacts in the starter if it is rebuildable) on it, try tapping the starter with a pry bar or long screwdriver when you are trying to start it.

Default OLD YAMAHA HELP!

I have a 1992 Timberwolf and have a similar problem. The problem I have is a weak battery but I have a pull cord as a backup. After giving the bike a good run, it will start perfect on the electric for a day or so but then the battery will get weak and gives the clicking sound that you hear. Not enough juice to turn over. Charge your battery and it should give you a quick fix. If that works only for a couple of days you will need to replace your battery.

Hope this helps.

If a battery is too bad on a quad or a bike, even if you charge it all the way up sometimes it will still not be enough to start it.
I always buy a new battery if I have to troubleshoot a problem with one starting

Default OLD YAMAHA HELP!

Well, I have tried hitting the start with stuff, and that dosen't work either. There is a brand new battery, and it still dont work. Sometimes I will get it to turn over, but other times it will just click. I was thinking the starter cyliniod would be the problem, but I'm not sure. I think my friend it going to take it to a mechanic though, but and more comments are apprciated! Thanks

Check out the seafoam post I just put up.

I would guess the carbs and fuel tank need cleaning.
