Default Yamaha Big Bear 400 IRS - starter clutch?

I recently picked up an 08 Big Bear 400. I noticed that when I crank the starter and if the machine doesn’t start right away, you can hear a “ka-clunk” noise coming from the left crank case cover. I pulled the starter clutch and idler gear. Is this amount of wear enough to cause “slippage” of that sprag bearing? Under bench test, it sounds quiet and locks as it should so I’m not sure...

It usually isn't wear on the gear, it is wear on the "rollers" or often just the feeble circular spring stretched. Symptoms are normally a scream rather than a clunk though.

Default Solution?

Did you figure out the problem and fix? I’ve been chasing this one on the same bike. Thanks!
