We adjusted the valves but it didn't help. Could the ticking be a loose timing chain? It smokes a little (white). Is it about time for a rebuild? It runs great, just noisy. Have any of you ran into this?
Thanks,
Jason

I wouldn't worry about the ticking I have a 2003 big bear and its about a week old and ticks. A lot of people told me its just the way yamaha's are but I don't know about the white smoke though?? How old is your big bear??

It isn't mine. Just trying to help a friend out and work on it for him. I think it is a '99 or 2000. It is in real good shape though. He has only had it for about a year.

TurboJay,

The white smoke that you mention might be antifrezze is leaking to the piston area and causing to do that. Is he loosing some antifrezze by chance? I just asking since you mention about the white smoke.

Correct me if I am wrong which I very well could be. I claim no intelligence with my quad... The Big Bear is AIR cooled, so wouldnt there be no antifreeze?

you're right. it's oil cooled. did he run through any water, mabey that's where the white smoke is coming from. more likly than not though i think it's just cold outside, all of our bikes do it when it cold out. mabey there is water in the exhaust??

tell me when does it smoke. if it doesn't do it until it gets hot, then there cold be water in the muffler, and it's burning off, but if it does it when it first starts up then it cold just be cold outside

Sorry guys, I thought it came with with water to keep the engine cool instead air cool engine.

I tend agree with Rincon of the statement he mention.....

Yeah the BB seams like a pretty bullet proof machine. Rincon's guesses sound like they would be accurate. Did he take it through really deep water?

It mainly smokes when you give it a big shot of fuel. Has been doing it for a while. Seems to be fine. Thought it could be part of the using oil, but he didn't say how much it was using.

He is mainly worried about the ticking, but have not heard another one. I told him he needs to hear my c-dale. It makes a lot more noise. He came back with "My neighbors Honda Recon doesn't tick like that." I think they are having their own quad wars.

It does tick (clatter) pretty loud like a valve tick though. It hasn't got any worse in 6 months (same with the smoking) so I am not real worried about it.

Thanks for helping guys. If anyone elses ticks, let me know.

I would start by doing an oil change and adjusting the valves. I am going to do this this weekend as mine seems to have gotten louder. I only have 245 miles on mine though. But it is time for the first service.
