New 400cc Tank Scout Arrived
#41
This atv is becoming a nitemare for me. I am just fet up with Tank Sports and the ATV. In the begininning they were great to deal with but now things have changed. I wish I bought a brand new Yamaha or Can-Am like I was planning. The customer service with Tank-Sports has went from excellent to horrible. I am now playing email tag with 3 differnent people and it takes 3+days to get a response of which are never helpful anymore. They finally sent me a $100 partial refund after badgering them for weeks. It's been a month since I recieved this quad and 3 weeks since I reported the first round of problems and I still haven't recieved any parts I was promised. Now I will be replacing the pinion seal and the rubber boots that are ripped or dry-rotted along with adjusting the clutches already because the transmission is slipping. I am completely sick of this atv and will never bother with this brand again. They think a $100 refund is going to keep me happy. Give me a break. This atv is nothing but constant issues. DO NOT BUY unless you plan on doing major repairs in the first 10 hours of owning it. I've learned that these deals are too good to be true!!

I also sent an email that will probably not get answered by Tank-Sports for at least a week about this review I have been doing. So maybe someone from Tank-Sports will chime in straighten this mess out for me. The 3 others I've dealt with have been useless to this ordeal. I think they are hired to test customers patients out

Did you see what factory it was built in? I'm wondering if this was an old model of a copy some sort that they were unloading cheap?? As normally the Jianshe 400 sells for around $4000. in the US I think and about $5000+ up here in Canada.
Rubber boots breaking are disapointing, hopefully they didn't cut corners on the gear boxes and cv joints.
What wrong with the trans? Isn't that just a manual 5 speed??
Can you do something through paypal to get a better refund??

The frame says Jianshe on it. I noticed last time I rode it and took it down the road yesterday again that the rpm speed can at times rev higher than the actual speed of the atv until you let off and allow it to catch up. The clutches are slipping bad and Tank-Sports acknowledged that they most likey need to be adjusted but then again that's my problem. Here's some email back and forth from my email and tank-sports. Notice the dates. This email goes back to a week after I reported the issues.
James, Jim, Don or whoever I am dealing with now. I just wanted make you aware that I have been doing a review on your company and product since we have owned your Jianshe 400U. The timeline and comments can be viewed at the link below. I am very frusterated and fet up with the communication and quality of the ATV. I have shared my knowledge with a larger portion of the powersports communtity on the internet positive and negative. After almost a month I have recieved a measly $100 partial refund. The first round of defective parts issue were reported 3 weeks ago.. Still no parts.... Now I am forced to do time intensive repairs to the atv without being compensated for it. I am hoping this is a joke and maybe you can do the right thing and start refunding some cash or come pick this junk up and send me one that is worth while. I've had enough of tank-sports and Jianshe products. I will also be leaving negative ebay feedback as of Saturday which will be a month since purchase if things are not straightened out to my satisfaction. The way I see it is I paid $2600 for an ATV worth less than $1500 to me. The repairs are costly and labor intensive and on top of that I can't even use the atv becuase your company has issues standing behind their product. It's great to be promised parts but to wait for them for 3 weeks is a joke.

Dona, I will repair the quad but can you send the clutch adjustment procedure to me so I can adjust the clutch properly. I will also be needing the 2 boots on the front of the swing arm that connect the drive shaft tube to the transmission/engine. The front one is completely ripped as seen in the pictures and the rear one appears to be dry rotted already. I'll replace the pinion sea/boots and adjust the clutch in my shop but we are talking quite a bit of labor to do all this work and have to adjust the clutches already. This really starting to bug me. You company is really lucky I am a licensed mechanic. I feel taken advantage of just a bit. What would you of done if I was just your average customer who had no mechanical knowledge? To adjust the clutches and replace the differential pinion seal is probably $500-800 worth of work at any motorsports dealership. Can I be compensated for any of my time and labor or is that just expected of me for purchasing this atv? I don't mean to sound rude but come on, 76 miles and I'm already turning the wrench on it, still waiting for my parts and haven't recieved any partial refund at all... I'm so aggrivated right now I am considering putting the atv for sale once I replace all the defective parts, repair the rear end leak and clutch slipping. Then at least I could buy something more dependable and enjoy it instead of working on it constantly

I would like to apologize on the many issues you have encountered with your new 400cc atv. The issues that you have mentioned are not common problems and I would like to help you to the best of my capability. It seems that the seal is the cause of the problem and would like to send you a replacement seal at no charge. From what you have explained, the main pinion seal is defective, can you confirm this is the defective part causing the oil leak. The performance issue can be caused by the clutch. This usually can be adjusted to fix the problem. Please feel free to contact me back with other issues.

Jim or James,
I have more issues already with this atv. I am pretty sure the rear pinion seal was defective. It looks like the seal was leaking from the rear end differential down the tube/shaft into the front boot. I went to strap the quad down on the trailer today and when I compressed the suspension to secure the quad I heard a pop and found about a 1/4 of a quart of gear lube below the boot on the trailer. The boot must of been loaded up with gear oil from the pinion seal leak and blew open, leaking fluid everywhere. I am not 100% positive that the pinion seal is what's wrong but it's a good posibility. I also noticed that when I ride the atv that the transmission revs in different gear and at different speeds instead of gripping the gears and accelerating smoothly. Seems like I am letting off the throttle quite a bit to allow the engine speed to keep up with the transmission. I've attached pictures of the cracked boot leaking gear lube and have absolutely no idea what could be wrong with the transmission. I'm just so aggrivated right now. I woke up at 7am this morning to meet some people to ride, loaded the quad, noticed the leak, put the atv back in the garage and went back to bed. Starting to get tired of the issues. I've only had the atv 3 weeks and have had nothing but problems. I've only done light riding with my 5 year old nephew too and it's already breaking. His little 110cc Tao Tao atv has held up better than this one for $2600. I am staring to think I should of bought a used name brand atv for the money and would of been better off or spent and extra $1500 to buy brand new from a local dealer. Let me know what the next step is please. I'm really getting sick of wasting all my time fooling with this atv. I've spent just as much time addressing problems than I have riding it probably. I should be able to get on it and go without all this hassle.

Mark, James is not in today. I read your email. I broke down the issues you wrote to reply to them on a one by one basis.
as for the parts, we will be sending out the parts sometime today.
as for the engine, it is certain that the engine was not dropped. the mfg would not install and engine that was dropped. the fins on the engine do chip from time to time. sometimes they are dinged when it is being lowered into the frame or from the engines hoised up on chains for installation. fins gets chips from riding also when pebbles hits the fins. out of the units that we have sold in the past on or off the internet, we have not had a defective engine due to an engine drop, neither have we seen a chipped fin on the 400u. prior email you have stated that the engine seems to perform well without issues, that leads me to conclude that the engine was not dropped. but even thou i am very certain that the engine is good, i will include a cylinder head for you as you have requested.
as for the prices, thats something that we can't really do anything for you. You purchased the vehicle with the buy it now option, we can not offer you discounts.
as for the resale value, i can't really help you on that one either, ATV goes though a lot more wear and tear than other products because of their intended usage. i am not an expert in resale value but based on looking at cycle trader magazine, the 2nd hand price for ATV has always been lower compared to the street bikes.
As for the $50 discount, it only applies to the cosmetic damage to the heat fins.
I will talk to James again see what he thinks as well.

I really appreciate you getting the parts out to me. I am going to need a new on/off fuel switch also. The switch was cracked in half and I had to glue it back together as you can see in the pictures I sent you. As for the $50 deposit I feel that is not enough to compensate for the cosmetic and possible mechanical flaw on the atv. A cylinder head is not designed to dropped on the ground and without your tech removing and inspecting it who knows what kind of long term damage it could cause. A new head lists for around $250 on the atv parts site. If I was to get a refund for the cost of the new cylinder head or sent a spare replacement head I would feel much more comfortable about the situation. The valves in the head could of been damaged along with the resale value of the atv when I go to sell it someday down the road. Anyone who inspects the engine now will be a bit weary of buying it because of this. I paid $2600 with the buy it now price on ebay and noticed you have sold a few of these atv's for $2300. I don't think a $250 refund is much to ask for after recieving a defective 3 year old left over ATV. I'll let you decide though. You can send me a new cylinder head which I may need one day or cover the cost of a replacement if the time shall ever come. Even if the head is mechanically ok I am still going to take a resale loss on the atv in the years to come.
Thank You
Mark

Hi Mark wanted to give you an update. My tech is looking for a right light right now, we have the lever switch and left light. we will be getting the parts to you asap.
as for the chip on the fin, the tech said that its visual, the chip will not impact your engine. he recommended getting the sharp edges filed down to avoid any scrapes. i spoke with James and he wants to offer you a $50 credit back for all the issue and for filing down the sharp edges. The refund will be made to your paypal account on monday.

Ok, thanks alot. Just so you know I am a licensed CT repairer so I am fully capable of installing the new parts myself and am not looking to be re-imbursed for labor or anyhting. I would just like the new parts to strighten the issues out. Thanks again
Just so you can explain to the tech if he asks why the lenses are leaking. I found that where the phillips head screw goes through the lense into the light housing, the screw had been overtightened on the rear ones and put small cracks in the rear lenses at that location. Causing the moisture/water to enter the light assembly

James I just noticed that both rear blinkers mounted in the rear fenders are both broken also. They are broken where they screw into the housing. It looks like were overtightened and broke off the mounting tabs on the amber part of the lense. I can send you pictures tomorrow morning if you would like. Just let me know what you need.

This is a copy of the ebay message I sent them
Dear sevenlotusinc,
I bought this atv 1 month ago as of this saturday. I still haven't recieved any of the defective parts that I found wrong and it's been taking longer and longer everyweek to receive answers to my questions via email. Contacting someone at tank is pretty much impossible unless it is you. You voice mail is full and I can't even leave a message. I am not happy and will never buy a Jianshe/Tank product again. I am going to have to spend hours of my valuable time adjusting the clutch now and replacing the rear pinion seal along with the rubber axle boots. I got a measly $100 refund.... I am sick of playing email tag and if things are not straighted out by Saturday which will be a month I am going to be forced to leave you bad feedback with my email contact info so buyers can contact me before they buy one of these nightmares. Your customer service went for decent to horrible and I am fet up. I am now dealing with 3 different people (Jim, James and Don) and completely frusterated.

I am going to start a claim through paypal Saturday the 5th. The 5th will be a month since purchase which I think is more than a reasonable time frame for a company to straighten issues out like these. I'll be sure to update you all if they decide to make things right or if they go in the other direction and I get completely screwed. I would like to add also that I haven't recieved a title to the atv yet either. I called about the title the day I recieved the atv and noticed it was missing. I was told that it was sent out 2 weeks after the purchase date. Just another broken promise I guess

Well it sounds like to me Tanks Sports or who ever is selling these things on ebay probably have a container full of old stock 400 models they are trying to get rid of cheap. And basically once they get their cash they are wipping their hands of them.
If they don't look after you if and you don't push it off a cliff, getting parts and fixing it shouldn't be an issue. However ..... this is terrible like you mentioned before for the average person who bought one of these with no mechanical know how they would be screwed totally!!!! Even more so if a person paid $4K or something for one of these things!
I looked hard at the Jianshe's up here in Canada last winter when I was shopping, they were a newer version of this Tank and twice the price!! I couldn't justify spending $5K on a chinese quad when for a few hunderd bucks more I could buy Yamaha 350 4x4.
Whats a new Yamaha 400 big bear worth in the US now ... $6000?? So its still less then have the cost but still a person could have bought a nice used one.

What!!! Now that sounds too good to be true!! Thats sounds likea heck of a deal unlesss it was beat and sunk in water or something.
I picked up a Honda 250EX Used for my kids this spring for less than half of what a new one costs. Its a 2005 model and a new up here Honda wants $6500 for these damn things which is crazy I think because I paid less for my new Yamaha 350 4x4. We cleaned it up changed fluids and its been running trouble free non stop since we bought it!

Even though these Chinese ATV may be Yamaha or Honda clones in looks its because they buy Yamahas old dies to stamp parts but the materials are of less quality thats were they save there money and why they sell so much cheaper.
Its the same reason a 1/2" Snap On wench last longer then a 1/2" wrench made in India out of lead. But both wenches look alike.
If you want to save money buy a used brand name. A used ten year old Snap-On is still a better wrench.
