It seems to happen when I was riding in deep snow making the motor get really hot and not really going too fast.My buddy's does the same thing,we use 87 octane. It only happens when the engine gets really hot.Anyone else experience this on their Recon? Also the tranny shifts harder when it is really hot,but when it cools down it shifts like a dream. Thanks in advance.

It happens to my Recon , it is nothing to worry about the heat makes the metal expand which can cause the pining spound and the shifting thing the gears are just slightly expanded from the heat and they dont fit together as well so that is why it shifts harder

Have you adjusted the valves yet? Maybe your hearing them chatter instead of having a pinging problem.

if your getting pinging under load, by all means use super unleaded!

Mine makes a pinging/clacking noise under heavy load. Mostly at the top of hills when I am moving too slow for the gear I am in. I have always used super unleaded in it so I don't think its the gas. When it warms up a bit Im going to check the valves. Hopfully a little adjustment is all it needs. I havn't noticed any shifting problem though.

If you are using 87 octain in it and it pings you will need to start using as high of an octain gas as posible. I whent to school to be a mechanic and we where told that the octain rating is basicly an anti ping rating. The higher the octain the more resistant it is to pinging. The higher the compresion the higher the octain needs to be. When you get an engine extreemly hot or under high load it has the same efect on the gas as high compresion. Altitude also has an efect on it. The higher you go, the les octane you need. So unles you are runing around at the top of the mountains, there is not many new vehicles or anything that should be run on less than 89 or higher. Hope this helps.
